Bra talk

Fellas...you can skip this blog entry if you like, but, ladies, listen up -- the second most vital piece of running gear for you (second only to good running shoes) is a good sports bra. Several, in fact.

Prepare to shell out big money -- good, supportive, high-quality sports bras aren't cheap, but, as with most running gear, if you invest in the good stuff, you'll have it for years. Seriously -- years (provided you don't put them in the dryer...never put your sports bras in the dryer..it breaks them down).

So, how do you find a good sports bra? I usually end up buying them online or at a sports expo at a big race, but...apparently, I need to run over to Braserie Dearie.

Here's what one new runner had to say about her experience at Braserie Dearie (this is the same runner who was treated poorly at Dick's -- see my blog from a few days ago):

"My girlfriend talked me into going to Braserie Dearie in the Colony Plaza (on W. 8th St.) I called them and told them our needs. They were nice enough to offer to stay open late that night so that we could get new bras on our way to one of the 8 Great Monday nights.

Braserie Dearie was extremely professional - their goal is to get you into the perfect bra. We tried on several different styles of bras. In the end, we found the perfect bra that gave us great
support. I was worried about when I saw the $55 price tag. (We were buying the most expensive one we'd tried on.) But my girlfriend pointed out that if I was willing to spend almost $100 on shoes - I should be willing to pay $50 for quality clothing. I bought the bra and definitely do not regret that decision.

I think it was one of the turn points. Definitely provided to me that having the right equipment is important - just as you have pointed out that the right shoes are a key.

BTW --
We decided to do the ERC Turkey Trot as our 1st event. We missed the Her Times but definitely plan on going it this year. I have found that the Erie Runner's Club is welcoming to us. I wasn't sure how welcoming they would be to novices but we've gotten nothing but encouragement when we've talked to ERC members. We did the 5 Miler and we're hoping to do several of the events this year. You are correct that the events gives us exposure and reminds us that runners come in all forms and body types."

You can find lots of great info. on sports bras -- why you need one, what to look for, etc. -- here.

P.S. As I've said before...nothing you can buy at any regular retailer (Kmart, Wal-mart) is good enough -- no matter what your cup size.
