Third Grade Recess Runners
Students in Angela Donikowski and Bill Tarbell's classes have been using recess to stay in shape! In February the classes started running or walking in the gym at recess.
This is not mandatory for the students, but rather purely voluntary. The students’ run/walk at their own pace, and other times they carry on conversations, jog with friends, and even challenge each other. The main objective is for all participants to enter and partake in the Annual Law Day 5k (3.2 mi.) run/walk in May; ultimately completing the race. The Erie County Bar Association in cooperation with the Erie Runners Club sponsors the race. Proceeds will benefit the educational needs of homeless children and the Runners Club Scholarship Fund. Practice for the race will enhance cross curricular activities, for example comparing and contrasting two running poems, and using graphs to chart progress.As an avid runner myself I want to get my students moving, make them realize the importance of wellness, and hopefully make a difference in their life just by doing this. I have about 15 students that will participate in the race and have come a long way since we first started in Feb. We actually stayed after school one day this week and got to run for 30 min. at our high-school track and will be staying after next Tuesday to do the same.
