Road ID

I never much thought about my safety while running until "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" came along. Like any successful formula it was quickly duplicated into several similar shows and soon the networks were full of shows about crime, murder, rape and all the other heinous things that people do to one another -- and especially to women. (It probably all started with "Law & Order," but I never watched that show -- the quirky characters annoy me.)

Anyway...it was sometime after CSI launched that my dark morning runs started to turn creepy and scary. Pre-CSI, the worst thing I feared running in the dark at 5 a.m. was falling into fresh roadkill or having a standoff with a big buck (really...it happened).

After I started watching CSI -- well ... my head was filled with thoughts of the horrible things that could happen to me and I became a bit of a scaredy cat. When I ran by the woods and heard rustling leaves, I thought the worst -- surely it was a crazy madman ready to clap a chloroform-filled rag over my mouth and drag me off to a cave in the woods where he'd chain me to the wall and torture me for 15 years. (uh...more than likely it wildlife...or wind).

I even pointed out shady-looking houses and sheds on my running route so my husband would know where to start looking for me if I disappear. "Seriously...check his basement if I come up missing...I'm telling you...that guy is weird."

ANYWAY...this new focus on all things horrible did one good thing -- It made me more aware of the possible dangers and more aware that I need to carry some sort of ID (see..I was going somewhere with all this). I mean...sure, I know I can spit all over & bleed all over and that the crack CSI team could find me in minutes...but that's TV and they're in Vegas. I'm not so sure about the real live law enforcement in these parts.

So, I bought a road ID tag for my shoes.

And, I quit watching "CSI," "Missing Persons," "Cold Case" and all the other shows just like them.

And, I found some morning running partners.

And, I forgot all about my Road ID tags when I bought new shoes & must've thrown them away.

Road ID is offering 10% off if you use coupon code: PCMAY58 (expires May 5).

(BTW -- you can get off even cheaper by making yourself a dog-tag at PetSmart)

Sallie:

I have the same feelings lately when I run trails. I always imagine being choked with my ipod cord. Its an awful world we live in. Thankfully we can run some of our stress away.
