The Guest speaker at Barb's Filutze's Step-by-Step program for this Monday, Aug. 4 is Dr. Dan Young, chiropractor and owner of Young Chiropractic Center.
I just got back from an appt. with Dr. Dan who happens to be one of my favorite people -- not only is he a great guy to run with (and he makes me faster!), but he's full of really great advice and he's kept my body in line for years now.
I am a big believer in chiropractic care because I think it only makes sense that the body gets out of line with all the jarring and jostling running causes and...a chiropractor can put it all back in place (before it causes an injury).
I first visited Dr. Dan after having my first daughter...7 years ago now. When I got back to running after the pregnancy/birth, I would get terrible hip pain if I ran more than 7 miles. A running friend strongly encouraged (OK...all but made the appt.) that I see Dr. Dan. I was skeptical, but I went. And...I went and I went...and a few months later...darn if the pain wasn't all gone. Pregnancy (and giving birth!) is hard on the hips and the spine -- talk about bones getting displaced!
I've been seeing Dr. Dan regularly ever since and I've remained injury free.
Beware that sometimes the treatments are anything but pleasant -- rubbing out knots is just...really painful, but not rubbing them out can cause more serious injuries.
And, the benefit of seeing a running doctor (Did I mention Dr. Dan does 70-milers and loves them?) is that his goal will always be to get you running again. He understands running injuries and common ailments runners deal with -- and he knows how difficult it is when you can't run (it's not just physical..it's mental as well).
So, there you have it...my shameless commercial for Dr. Dan and regular chiropractic care.

Heather-
I e-mailed you back in March, that my family was moving back here from Georgia (well I am from here anyway!!). We finally got here at the end of May and moved into a house the middle of July. I have been running, but not as much as I would like, and I by myself. I did sign up for the Hamot 10K, which I haven't done in years. When do people meet to run, morning, evening?? Once school starts in a few weeks, I will be able to run in the AM more. Anyhow..I enjoy your blog and columns in the paper. Thanks.
