I never really run alone. When I don't run with other people, I run with my friends from Nickelback and Linkn Park and Staind (hmmm...did you ever notice that rock stars can't spell?).
Music is highly motivational to me and the right song can get me up any hill. I like all kinds of music -- from Neil Diamond to Metallica -- but, when running, I prefer the harder stuff (Kid Rock, Eminem, etc.). I'm sure it has something to do with the beat and the anger/power of the songs.
I recently stumbled across Run2Rhythm.com a Web site that sells music with the perfect tempo for any pace from a 16-minute mile to a 6-minute mile.
I listened to a few of the samples and it's pretty cool. Check it out...it might be perfect for your iPod.
It's not for me. Apparently, I need gravely voices and offensive lyrics.
Hey ... whatever get you through the run.

Hi
I have to concur with your conclusion about the tempo music helping keep a fast pace. I can remember how many times I'll be running with my partner - only to have her call me about 5 minutes later with her about 500 feet behind me. Her only words are - what - are - you - listening - to - - spoken in choppy/labored breath. I usually just say - sorry Nickleback again - I'll switch to the Non-Surge Playlist.
Those bands seem to be the best for keeping me tempo running. However, my running partner T - she's had to endure a few times with me missing my headphones and she's pretty much determined that I can't go running without headphones because my music's tendency towards offensive lyrics sometimes freaks her out and makes her wonder if she really should be running alone with me.
Thanks
C

Heather,
There was a time that I wouldn't be caught dead running with a set of headphones.....now I consider my iPod to be my best running partner (sorry Randy & Laura).
