Know the lingo: Energy gels

When you're just getting started in a sport, it's hard to learn the lingo. Running and walking, like any sport, has it's own special language and local phrases. Each week, I'll define a term or phrase that will help you not only walk the walk (or run the run), but talk the talk.

Energy gels - Commercially prepared semi-liquid carbohydrate snack packaged in single serving pouches, used as a supplement by long distance runners and endurance athletes during long periods of exercise. They are made to provide an energy boost without stopping to eat and/or chew.

Brand names of energy gels that might sound familiar to you include: GU, Cliff Shot, Energy gel, PowerBar gel, Carb Boom and Hammer gel.

Did you know you can make your own sport drinks and energy gels? Recipes are available on Cycling Performance Tips Web site. Scroll down till you get to homemade sport drinks.
