Know the lingo: Fartlek

When you're just getting started in a sport, it's hard to learn all the lingo. Running and walking, like any sport, has it's own special language and local phrases. Each week, I'll define a term or phrase that will help you not only walk the walk (or run the run), but talk the talk.

Fartlek
Though it sounds gross and maybe a little dirty, fartlek is a popular training method for runners. The word fartlek is Swedish for "speed play" which includes variable pace running, a mixture of slow running, running at a moderate pace and short, fast bursts. Fartlek training is a "creative way" to increase speed and endurance.
