Can't find footing? Keep driving

I got this note from a running friend last week (referring to the icy/snowy running conditions last weekend)

We were out running on Saturday too. However, we were in Northern Crawford County. Be running by 8 am. That was the plan.

Dressed in several layers, gloves, ear muffs and the best wishes of my children, my running partner and I headed for the dirt road in front of my home. It took us about 20 steps on the icy, snow-covered road to determine that we were not running our normal path.

New plan. We would get into the truck and drive to a paved road. As we drove, all of our normal routes were completely iced over. We finally found about 8 miles of road that was wet, but mostly ice and snow free. We parked in a well drive way. I called my husband to let him know where we were. However, I could only tell him how we drove once we left the house, but it gave him a general idea of where we were going to be running.

We set off. The first half-mile I was cold. But sure enough, by the time I got to the first mile I was fine. It was beautiful. Blue skies. The sun came out, even while the snow flakes fell. It was crisp. It was peaceful.

Not only did the run help with the stress of the week, but the peace and serenity of the atmosphere was amazing. I said several time, “Man it is beautiful out here.” I felt like I was seeing the area for the first time. I may not appreciate the cold, but there is a beauty to the snow-covered country side.
