Is there magic in the world? Of course there is. There is the big ticket magic; the stuff that’s found in sunsets and the faces of your children.
But today we’re focused on nuisance magic, the stuff the Norse legends attributed to Loki, the god of mischief.
For instance, try this. If you have a refrigerator in your garage, open the garage to the neighborhood and then turn around and open the refrigerator door to get something to drink.
Quickly turn back around and (Poof) every child in the neighborhood is standing in your garage with that Oliver Twist “Sir, may I have another?” look on every face.
They believe in magic; the magic that comes from a refrigerator that never runs out of juice or soda.
Speaking of having to go to the grocery store, the other day I ran in at two minutes before nine to refill a prescription. The pharmacy was empty, not even open yet so I took a quick stroll down the aisle for maybe ten seconds before turning around to go back to the counter.
(Poof) In that time there were six (count ‘em) six senior citizens standing in line as the gates rolled back. For many of them, this was the only chore of the day, but for me there were other places to go, like work for instance.
Mischief magic indeed.
That same magic also works in convenience stores. If you’re a non-believer, try this. Walk into the store when no one is at the counter and walk to the cooler to grab your diet whatever. Turn around and look at the counter. I guarantee you there will be (Poof) four people in line offering their arms and legs to pay for gas.
Mischief magic is when you are behind one of the slowest drivers in the world torturing you for two miles. He or she finally puts on the turn signal half a mile early and when the turn comes (Poof) the absolutely slowest driver in the world pulls out in front of you.
Mischief magic degrees that if there are three lines at the bank or at the Wal Mart that it is set in stone from the heavens that you will pick the line with (Poof) the one person who has a twenty minute problem requiring two managers and a call to corporate.
Mischief magic makes sure that if exact change is needed then you will be (Poof) exactly one quarter short.
Is there magic in the world? Of course there is. The problem is that’s not always a good thing.
