The following is an open letter to Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, Annika Sorenstam or anyone else with deep pockets and a deep love of golf:
Dear Sir or Madam:
My name is Scott Bremner and I live in Erie, PA. I love to golf. In fact, few things in life give me more pleasure than an afternoon spent wading through thick underbrush trying to locate the final resting place of a wildly sliced tee shot.
Good times indeed.
Sadly, not all the times have been good in my hometown of Erie. Actually, we’re really kind of broke. It’s not any one person’s fault really, we just spent the last decade or so spending more money as a city than we brought in and now even our reserve accounts are reading goose eggs.
It’s gotten so bad that even the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania could step in to take over operations because of our stubborn inability to balance our checkbook.
So our mayor, Joe Sinnott, has decided to get rid of the non-essential city operations that cost money, which unfortunately includes the Erie Golf Course.
As you probably know, Erie is a course designed in 1926 by legendary course architect A.W. Tillinghast.
What you may not know, is that the course was reworked several years ago and the clubhouse was renovated for about two million dollars, which is money we still owe and don’t really have.
The problem is, the way to max out the city’s investment would be to sell the course for housing developments, which would pay off the debt but also permanently erase an 80-year old green gem.
So..
If you would be willing to float us a couple mil then we could keep the course because I’m sure that with the right marketing we can make it the winner all of us in golf know it can be.
You get to be the hero, save the day, and save an important piece of American golf history.
I get to keep spraying little white balls all across Penn’s woods.
I just love win-win situations, don’t you?
