Dear Mr. Gore

Dear Mr. Gore:

First let me say how much I admire your commitment to the environment. A lot of people talk about making the world a better place but you seem determined to actually work on it.

And I’m sure your science is solid when you warn us about the dangers of global warming in your documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

Oh, and congrats on the Oscar nod by the way.

It’s just that I have this little problem in taking you seriously right now when you talk of the planet heating up.

You see, my street looks like a bobsled run and the snow is up over my mailbox.

It’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just that it’s hard to focus on world issues when your lungs feel like you’re swallowing needles every time you walk outside and inhale.

I mean, -20 wind chill?

And how can I speak of world events when my lips go numb in the time it takes to walk out to pick up the paper, adding “W’s” throughout my vocabulary even in a brief greeting to my neighbor as I sprint back for cover.

“Hwey, Alww, Hwow ahww woo?

Indeed, I have little doubt of Man’s ability to harm or even destroy that which surrounds him, and it would certainly be inconvenient to give up every spray can and combustible engine in sight.

But at the moment more pressing inconveniences would include an hour trip for milk and eggs at the store because of a truck stuck halfway up a hill. It would also include a 5:30 AM date with my snow blower so my wife can go to work. And don’t forget a job that requires me first to be outside for most of the day, and then later asks me to go on television to tell people that the smart thing to do would be to stay inside.

I want the planet to be healthy for my children, Mr. Gore, I really do.

Right now though, I just want to be warm, and at this point I’m not all that picky of the heat source, be it fossil fuel or small thermonuclear device.

But I promise to focus on the health of Mother Earth just as soon as I warm up.

How does August sound?

Thanks for listening,
Scott W. Bremner
