HERSHEY -- Cathedral Prep freshman Jamal Lyons did what few of his District 10 brethren couldn't at Thursday's PIAA Class AAA wrestling tournament. Lyons advanced to Friday's 140-pound championship quarterfinals with an impressive 20-6 major decision over Pleasant Valley senior Shane Everett, who was ranked 10th in the final state poll.
Lyons (30-4) will face Upper Perkiomen's Zach Kemmerer today in a matchup of region champions. Lyons won the Northwest Region title and Kemmerer (50-5) the Southeast Region.
Conneaut Lake's Cash Horne (152) was the only other district wrestler still in contention for the top of the podium. Horne's takedown with 4 seconds left gave him an 8-6 victory over Fox Chapel's Brian Letters.
Horne will face Central Dauphin's Christian Mory (32-4) in the next round. Mory, the second seed from the South Central Region, beat Plymouth Whitemarsh's Eric Powell 5-1.
General McLane's Keith Scharrer went 1-1 at 103 pounds. The loss was a 19-4 technical fall to unbeaten and top-ranked Mark Rappo (50-0) of Council Rock South.
Scharrer shook off the loss and blanked Pleasant Valley's Jordan Toledo 3-0 in the first round of consolations.
The AAA wrestlers that were vanquished on the first day were Prep's Nick Milano (152), McDowell's Steve Mancuso (112), Warren's Dan Pascuzzi (135), Conneaut Lake's Clint Copeland (140), Meadville's Bryan Towers (160) and Corry's John Mangol (215).
