* Liambas suspended: Left wing Michael Liambas received an automatic four-game suspension for his two game misconducts in Friday’s loss against Oshawa, said Sherry Bassin, managing partner/general manager. Liambas also received an instigator penalty and 5-minute fighting major for his third-period fight with Generals defenseman John Quarrie. OHL officials also could review the incident and extend the suspension, Bassin said. Liambas served the first game on Saturday.
* Family reunion: Defenseman Brian Shaw, 17, played in front of his family on Saturday. Earlier in the day, he watched his older sister, Amanda, 20, a junior defenseman at Boston University, play against Mercyhurst at Mercyhurst Ice Center. Brian had not seen her play for two years.
“It was nice to see everyone,” said Brian, a St. Thomas, Ontario, native. “It’s nice when they’re here.”
Brian’s older, Jeff, 24, played in the OHL for Sudbury from 2001-03. His sister, Sarah, 23, was the only sibling not to play hockey. She attends Teachers’ College at the University of Western Ontario.
* A positive outing: Rookie goaltender Shane Owen was satisfied with his OHL debut. He stopped 20-of-23 shots in relief of Justin Garay on Friday. Owen’s only criticism was of his rebound control. “I know what I need to be working on,” said Owen, who was rookie Jaroslav Janus’ backup on Saturday.
Owen was nervous at first on Friday, he said. But he settled down after a few shots, including a save against center John Tavares on Owen’s first career shot. “I was ready to play,” he said.
* Around the rink: The Otters scratched goaltender Justin Garay, right wing Nick Palmieri (mononucleosis) and Liambas. … Windsor scratched defenseman Jesse Blacker and right wings Richard Greenop and Ryan Baldwin. Both wingers served an automatic one-game suspension for game misconducts received Friday in Guelph. But league officials reportedly could review both incidents.
