Otters sign Mark Messier’s son

The Erie Otters have signed overage defenseman Lyon Messier, 20, as a free agent, the club announced Thursday. Messier, reportedly the son of former NHL great Mark Messier, began the season with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets. He had no points in four games.
Lyon Messier, a Troy, Mich., native, spent the previous two seasons with the Texas Tornadoes of the North American Hockey League. The 6 foot, 1 inch, 205-pounder had five goals, 37 points and 86 penalty minutes in 112 games with the Tornadoes. He made his Otters’ debut on Thursday in Sarnia.
