Otters to place Messier on waivers

The Erie Otters will place overage defenseman Lyon Messier, 20, on waivers Wednesday, the club announced today. The club signed Messier, son of former NHL great Mark Messier, on Oct. 17 to solidify a young defense. But he produced no points, a minus-4 rating and four penalty minutes in eight games.
OHL clubs have 72 hours to claim Messier. If he isn’t claimed during that period, the Otters retain his rights. Then the club can release or trade him. His departure leaves the Otters with left wing Ronny Rogers as the lone overager. Messier, a Troy, Mich., native, played only four games with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets before being waived earlier this season.
In other news, right wing Anthony Peluso will serve a one-game suspension for the match penalty he received Saturday against Plymouth. He was penalized for slew footing in the third period. He will miss Friday’s game in Sault Ste. Marie.
