On Campus: How Erie-area college athletes are faring

Olivia Zaleski, a Corry graduate who swims for NCAA Division III Denison, met NCAA provisional qualifying times in four events at the Miami Invitational Dec. 1.

Zaleski, a sophomore, qualified as part of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams. She also qualified individually in the 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly.

Denison finished fifth at the 16-team meet in Oxford, Ohio.

-- Erin Kerner was named Northeast Conference player of the week for the Quinnipiac women's basketball team.

Kerner, a junior from Mercyhurst Prep, averaged 19.5 points and 3.5 assists in two victories. Quinnipiac improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEC.

Kerner is averaging 16.4 points, fifth in the conference, and shooting 44.1 percent on 3-point attempts, third in the conference.

Quinnipiac plays Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Delaware. The Bobcats' closest game to Erie is Jan. 7 at Loreto against St. Francis (Pa.).

-- Mercyhurst North East's wrestling team won the Alfred State College Tournament this past weekend by a wide margin. The Saints had 118.5 points to 68 by runner-up Ithaca.

Five Saints won their weights: Greg Saumenig (125 pounds), Ryan Donovan (141), McDowell graduate Nathan Kucnick (184), Girard graduate Shane Nolan (197) and Nick Maxworthy (285).

-- Leon Rollins leads Mercyhurst North East's men's basketball team with a 22.8 points per game scoring average.

Rollins, a sophomore guard from Philadelphia, shot 54.5 percent from the field in 10 games. He's one of six Saints averaging more than 10 points per game.

-- Perrial Pearson is averaging a team-high 12.5 points for the Mercyhurst North East women's basketball team.

Seneca graduate Jennifer Klofft averaged 8.1 points in her first nine games.

-- The Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team is "Inside Lacrosse" magazine's preseason favorite to win the East Coast Conference championship.

Lakers David Osier, Matt Spahr and Jason LaShomb were named preseason all-conference.

-- Gannon swimmers broke five program records Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the Ashland Invitational.

Paul Musille set the Gannon record in the 100 freestyle in 46.70 seconds, and Megan Beresford set a record in the 3-meter diving event, also qualifying for NCAA Division II nationals.

The men's 200 free relay team finished in one minute, 25.89 seconds. The 400 free relay team -- featuring McDowell grad Richie DiLoreto, Cathedral Prep graduate John Krakowski, Seth Hazlett and Musille, finished in a record 3:10.48.

And the women's 800 free relay set a record in 8:7.07. The team features Ashlee Calandra, McDowell gradiate Rachel Rzymel, Liz Clary and Ellie Hess.

Gannon is off until Jan. 11.

-- Harbor Creek graduate Pino Scavella had four top-six tournament finishes and a 14-5 record to start Gannon's wrestling season.

Scavella, a redshirt senior, won the Catholic Invitational Nov. 10 at Mercyhurst College. He also was third at the Ashland Invitational Dec. 1. He has 10 falls.

-- Allegheny College freshman Zac Ross finished seventh in the 5,000 meters at the Kent State Golden Flash. The Meadville graduate ran a personal-best 14:54.78, and was seventh in the 3,000 in 8:56.96.

Ogechi Nwokedi, an Oil City grad, was seventh in the women's 800 in 2:22.92.

-- Emily Washek tied for fourth in the pole vault for Ohio Wesleyan on Dec. 8 at the Capital Crusader Invitational indoor track and field meet. Washek is a sophomore from McDowell.

OWU features a number of General McLane graduates: Sophomore Sarah Shinn, a star in 800 meters; sophomore Claire Everhart in distance runs; and freshman distance runner Kat Zimmerly.
