On Campus: McLane's Curtze stars at RIT

-- Kristen Curtze, a General McLane graduate, is the Empire 8 women's swimming and diving athlete of the week as well as the RIT female athlete of the week.

Curtze won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle for RIT against William Smith on Jan. 22. She also was part of the winning 200 medley team.

On Saturday, Curtze won four events in a loss to Le Moyne: the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events plus the 400 free relay.

-- Erin Kerner scored her 1,000th career point at Quinnipiac.

Kerner, a junior from Mercyhurst Prep, is just the sixth player to score 1,000 points for the Bobcats since the program went Division I.

She scored 25 points in a 62-60 victory over Long Island on Jan. 20. Kerner's 3 with 4 minutes, 24 seconds to play gave the Bobcats their first lead of the second half, and she later made a layup and ensuing foul shot, two free throws and a basket on a drive.

The Bobcats play at Farleigh Dickinson on Saturday.

-- Kathryn Skelly, a freshman at John Carroll, was fourth in the 400 meters at the Kenyon Kickoff Meet indoor track and field event. The McDowell graduate finished in 1 minute, 5.13 seconds.

Ferraro, a sophomore from Harbor Creek, ran the 200 in 23.22 seconds and the 55 in 6.51 seconds.

Sophomore Doug Stevenson, of Sharpsville, ran 6.64 seconds in the 55, also better than the previous record.

Cassie Manelick, of Youngsville, set a Behrend record with a throw of 28 feet 11.25 inches in the women's weight throw.

The Lions will compete in the Mount Union Invitational on Feb. 9.

-- Mercyhurst College will open the 2008 football season at Wayne State on Aug. 30. It's a non-conference holdover from the GLIAC, a conference Mercyhurst and Gannon will leave after the 2007-08 athletic seasons end in order to join the PSAC.

-- Thiel College junior Andrew Riddle, of Franklin, is the Presidents' Athletic Conference wrestler of the week.

Riddle, 17-7 at 184 pounds, went 5-0 a week ago in dual meets. This past Saturday during the Tomcat Five, he won four more times.

The Tomcats visit Baldwin-Wallace College for the John Summa Invitational on Saturday.
