Six can't-miss sporting events to keep you occupied this weekend:
Friday
1. Oak Hill Academy at Villa Maria Academy girls basketball, 8 p.m., Hammermill Center. Six of the Lady Warriors are 6 feet or taller, including 6-5 Lakeesa Daniel and Arieal Johnson. Oak Hill was No. 16 in the USA Today Super 25 preseason rankings. Villa, No. 2 in preseason state poll, counters with junior Kayla McBride, who has committed to Notre Dame.
2. Windsor Spitfires at Erie Otters, 7 p.m., Tullio Arena. The Otters are .500 and flirting with a winning record heading into the holiday break later this month. The Spitfires (24-3-0-0) are the Ontario Hockey League's best team, but one of their losses came to Erie. Windsor's Taylor Hall and Erie's Ryan O'Reilly are likely first-round NHL draft picks, Hall in 2010 and O'Reilly in 2009.
Saturday
3. PSAC wrestling championships, Mercyhurst College Athletic Center, 9:30 a.m. Edinboro is the overwhelming favorite and could win its fourth straight team title, which hasn't happened in more than half a century. Mercyhurst College and Gannon get their introductions to the PSAC, which includes a strengthened Clarion squad. Championship rounds begin at 6:30 p.m. Students from PSAC-member institutions get in free with school ID. Passes are $12 for adults and $3 for students; session tickets are $7 for adults and $2 for students.
4. Syracuse at No. 9 Mercyhurst College women's hockey, 2 p.m., Mercyhurst Ice Center. Game 2 of the weekend series will be just the fourth home game of the season for the Lakers, against the startup program that tried to woo Mercyhurst coach Michael Sisti this past offseason. Mercyhurst won 4-1 and 7-1 at Syracuse last month, but this weekend's also a tune-up for the biggest remaining games of the regular Dec. 12-13 when No. 3 St. Lawrence visits.
5. Fairview boys basketball Tip-Off Tournament. The consolation game's at 6 p.m., the championship at 7:30. With a field featuring the Tigers, General McLane, Hickory and McDowell, both games are worth the price of admission.
Sunday
6. Cowboys at Steelers, 4:15 p.m., Fox TV. The Steelers have won three straight and, at 9-3, lead the AFC North by a game. The Cowboys (8-4), too, have won three straight, but trail the Giants (11-1) in the NFC East. Mostly, though, when these two hook up, whether regular season or playoffs, it's worth the time to watch. In their last meeting, in 2004, Jerome Bettis scored from 2 yards with 30 seconds to play in a 24-20 Pittsburgh win.
