U.S. goalkeeper Friedel sets record in England

American goalkeeper Brad Friedel, from Lakewood, Ohio, set an English Premier League record for playing in his 167th consecutive game Sunday during Aston Villa's 0-0 tie with Fulham.

That's about a little more than a four-season stretch.

Friedel broke the record set by another goalkeeper, David James, who made it 166 straight games in April while playing for Portsmouth.

Friedel has made a nice career for himself in England. He is known as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premiership. Just last week, he held Manchester United to a 0-0 tie, including a diving save on a shot by star striker Cristiano Ronaldo in the 14th minute. Ronaldo had 49 goals in various competitions for ManU last season, including 31 in 34 league matches.
