U.S. women win U-20 World Cup

The U.S. women’s under-20 soccer team beat North Korea 2-1 in the final of the U-20 World Cup on Sunday in Santiago, Chile.

The Americans have two players with regional ties.

Alyssa Naeher (Penn State) and Meghan Klingenberg (Pine-Richland High School) both started Sunday’s game.

Naeher is a goalkeeper. She is a junior at Penn State. She won the Golden Glove Award as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

Klingenberg is a defender who is a sophomore at North Carolina.

Incidentally, just a few hours before the U-20 championship game, Klingenberg’s Tar Heels won the NCAA title with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame.

The Americans made up for a loss to North Korea in the U-17 final last month, also by a 2-1 score in overtime.
