U.S. team wishes for cold temps

Can’t the warm weather hold off just a few more days?

I’d prefer the cold weather to stick around at least until Wednesday. That’s when the U.S. will play Mexico in a World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio.

I want it to stay cold. Bitter cold. It’s been cold since November, at least. I can take just a couple of more days.

The forecast for Columbus on Wednesday is a high of 59, and a low of 39 in the evening.

Will it be cold enough at kickoff at 7 p.m.? (ESPN2)

I mean, the whole idea of hosting the qualifier in Columbus was so the cheating Mexicans would be frozen into submission, and the U.S. could carry off an easy three points toward earning a berth in South Africa in 2010.

It worked eight years ago. The Mexicans didn’t even come out for warmups before a 2-0 U.S. victory in Columbus. Before the match, the Mexican press dubbed it “Guerra Fria” (Cold War).

US Soccer was hoping for deja vu for Guerra Fria Dos.

If the Mexicans do come out of the locker room before the match, you know the temps are tolerable for them. That would be too bad.

It would be like the Americans going into Mexico City, and, suddenly, the polluted air clears, the stadium slides down to sea level, the fans are polite, and the city’s water meets American sanitation standards.

The Americans got lucky by drawing this game — the first of 10 final-round qualifiers for next year’s World Cup — in February. Now, we need Mother Nature to cooperate.
