Girard-Villa, McLane basketball playoff sites set

The Girard and Villa Maria girls will meet Friday night at 7 at Edinboro's McComb Fieldhouse for the right to advance to the PIAA Class AA basketball semifinal next week.

Meanwhile, General McLane's quest for a historic championship continues Friday when the Lancers play Oliver in the Class AAA boys quarterfinals at Sharon High School at 7 p.m.

The Lancers (25-4) advanced with a 72-43 victory over Indian Valley on Tuesday night. Oliver (17-12) defeated Warren 66-55.

District 10 champion General McLane is attempting to become the first program in the state to win PIAA football and basketball championships in the same school year.

Grove City (25-4), the District 10 runner-up, will play Susquehanna Township on Friday at 7 p.m. at Somerset Area High School in the other AAA quarterfinal. Grove City advanced with a triple-overtime win over Ambridge on Tuesday, 70-64.

If McLane and Grove City were to win Friday, the teams would meet Tuesday in the semifinal round for the right to play March 23 at 8 p.m. in the PIAA championship game in University Park.

Villa Maria (25-4), the District 10 girls AAA champion, reached Friday's quarterfinal round with a 49-44 victory over Bishop McCort on Tuesday. Girard, the third-place team from D-10, advanced with a 48-37 victory over Karns City.

The winner of their game will play Tuesday for a spot in the PIAA championship game March 23 at noon at University Park.

In Class A, District 10 boys champion Kennedy Catholic (21-5) will play District 7 No. 3 Serra Catholic (24-3) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at North Hills High School in Pittsburgh.

High school athletes, tell us about your sports mom

Love your mom? Of course you do.

Aside from the whole your-welfare-before-mine and unconditional love things, she's been your fan, friend, coach and chauffeur for as many years as you've been playing sports.

If you're an active high school student-athlete in northwestern Pennsylvania, and "Soccer Mom" doesn't begin to describe the role your mother plays in your sports career, the Erie Times-News wants to tell everyone about her.

You don't have to compete for your high school team, merely be of high school age. You might be a competitive shooter, a figure skater, a gymnast or another out-of-school athlete rather than a member of a school-sponsored team.

We'll publish as many of your responses as we can May 9 in a special pre-Mother's Day edition of Varsity, District 10's No. 1 high school sports resource. And we'll post all of your responses at www.GoErie.com.

Drop off or send letters of no more than 150 words to Sports Moms, c/o Sports Department, Erie Times-News, 205 W. 12th St., Erie, PA 16534; fax them to (814) 870-1808; or e-mail them to sports@timesnews.com with Sports Moms in the subject line.

Please include your name and the full name of the person you're writing about as well as your phone number and hometown.

Deadline is 5 p.m. May 2.
