Week One Record: 5-1.
Overall: 5-1.

Week Two Football Previews
Friday
Region 1
Cochranton Cardinals (0-0, 1-0) at West Middlesex Big Red (0-0, 0-1), West Middlesex Stadium, 7 p.m.
For one week at least, the region standings look inverted.
Cochranton, tied for last in 2006, won its season opener with a 34-12 win over Maplewood. The Cardinals’ Andy Harkness and Andy Boughner each scored two touchdowns, while running back Joe DeWitt finished with 141 yards.
West Middlesex, the defending region champ and a finalist in last season’s PIAA Class A title game, lost 34-6 to Neshannock. The Lancers, 1-9 overall last season, won their first game with new coach Pat Cuba.
Do those outcomes indicate how the Cardinals and Big Red will fare this fall? Their game could be a big indication.
Prediction: West Middlesex 20, Cochranton 12.

Conneaut Lake Indians (0-0, 0-1) at Lakeview Sailors (0-0, 1-0), Lakeview Stadium, 7 p.m.
Thomas Miller took the early lead in the District 10 rushing department. The Sailors’ running back racked up 181 yards and three touchdowns in Lakeview’s 50-0 victory at Union City.
Miller could find himself in a ground-gaining contest with Conneaut Lake’s Cash Horne. The Indians’ senior rushed for more than 1,200 last season and ran for 120 in Friday’s loss to Saegertown.
Conneaut Lake can’t afford to get behind like Union City did against the Sailors. Lakeview led 14-0 before the Bears ran their first play on offense.
Prediction: Lakeview 28, Conneaut Lake 20.

Region 2
Eisenhower Knights (0-0, 1-0) at Cambridge Springs Blue Devils (0-0, 1-0), Baird Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
Cambridge Springs avenged last season’s opening loss to Union-Rimersburg with a 34-15 road victory over the Clarion County team. The Blue Devils will aim for a similar result in their second straight game against a team nicknamed the Knights.
Eisenhower’s defense frustrated Reynolds in a 15-0 victory at Transfer. The Knights intercepted three passes and recorded a safety.
A victory over the Blue Devils would give Ike a 2-0 record going into its Sept. 14 home opener against Union City. It would be a positive sign for the Knights, whose inconsistent play against region rivals cost them a 2006 postseason berth.
Prediction: Cambridge Springs 15, Eisenhower 7.

Mercyhurst Prep Lakers (0-0, 1-0) at Conneaut Valley Indians (0-0, 0-1), Clements Field, 7 p.m.
The Lakers began defense of their region championship with a 10-0 victory at Mercer. Mercyhurst’s defense held the Mustangs to 182 yards in offense and recovered a fumble.
That could be bad news for Conneaut Valley, which will play its first home game with new coach Jeff Dahlstrand. The Indians were shut out 49-0 at Linesville.
Almost as bad for Conneaut Valley was the first-quarter ejection of wide receiver Ben Varee. The 6-foot, 4-inch senior not only sat out the final three quarters of that game but also won’t play against the Lakers, per PIAA rules.
Prediction: Mercyhurst Prep 27, Conneaut Valley 7.

Youngsville Eagles (0-0, 0-1) at Maplewood Tigers (0-1, 0-0), Maplewood Stadium, 7 p.m.
Expect Maplewood to key on the run when Youngsville has the ball. Eagles quarterback Neil Koontz only attempted one pass against Seneca, even though Youngsville lost 43-0.
The Tigers never recovered from the 26-point second quarter that Cochranton put on them in a 34-12 win. Maplewood started Broc Baker at quarterback over incumbent Andrew Hamilton, but the sophomore finished 5-of-22 for 78 yards and was intercepted twice.
If the Tigers lose their home opener, they could be looking at a 0-3 start. Maplewood plays at Mercyhurst Prep, the defending region champ, on Sept. 15.
Prediction: Maplewood 21, Youngsville 6.

Iroquois Braves (0-0, 0-1) at Saegertown Panthers (0-0, 1-0), Canon Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
The only downside to this matchup is that the teams don’t meet later in the regular season. The Braves and Panthers were District 10 Class A playoff teams last season.
Against Conneaut Lake, Saegertown showed that its defense could be as formidable as its offense. The Panthers won 36-16 last Friday and held the Indians to 60 yards in offense for the second half.
Iroquois almost had its home opener against North East moved to Ted Miller Stadium because of lighting problems. The site made little difference, as the Class AA Grapepickers won 34-0.
Expect the Braves to have a better showing against the Panthers.
Prediction: Saegertown 27, Iroquois 20.

Region 5
Warren Dragons (0-0, 0-1) at Meadville Bulldogs (0-0, 0-1), Bender Field, 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs assumed first place in one District 10 category. Problem is, it’s the wrong one.
Harbor Creek beat Meadville 34-6 last Friday, which was the Bulldogs’ 15th straight loss. They inherited the longest such streak in District 10 when Fort LeBoeuf beat Northwestern that same night.
In order to erase that scarlet letter, they’ll have to beat region contender Warren in their home opener. The Dragons were tied with General McLane at halftime before the defending state champions emerged with a 28-14 victory.
Prediction: Warren 24, Meadville 13.

Titusville Rockets (0-0, 1-0) at Franklin Knights (0-0, 1-0), Franklin Field, 7 p.m.
Like Meadville, Titusville carried over a trait from the 2006 season.
Unlike Meadville, the Rockets’ trait was a positive one: shutout victories.
Titusville routed Corry 46-0 at Carter Field last Saturday. Derek Carr rushed for 168 and two touchdowns and Ben Anderson scored three times for last season’s region titlist.
Franklin also opened at home last Saturday and beat Central Tech 35-18. The Knights won despite the absence of head coach Dave Smith, who missed the game to attend a friend’s previously scheduled wedding in Chicago.
Smith would be wise to show for this one.
Prediction: Titusville 27, Franklin 14.

Saturday
Region 1
Linesville Lions (0-0, 1-0) at Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles (0-0, 0-0), Butala Stadium, noon.
The known: Linesville dominated in a 49-0 victory over Conneaut Valley last Friday.
The Lions’ two Dougs, Williams and Farley, combined to rush for 296 yards and four touchdowns. Wideout Matt Laird also caught three passes for 107 yards.
The unknown: Kennedy Catholic and how the perennial postseason contender will fare.
The Golden Eagles sustained heavy graduation losses to their 7-5 playoff team of 2006. The returning players had an extra week to prepare for the Lions because Kennedy Catholic had a bye last weekend.
Linesville plays the first of three straight road games, a stretch that could ultimately determine its postseason fortune.
Prediction: Kennedy Catholic 24, Linesville 20.

High school notes

Runners better be near the front of the pack when the starting gun sounds at Saturday’s 17th annual Big Red Cross Country Invitational, or they could be caught in the pack.
A total of 1,321 runners representing 39 schools are entered in the invitational.
West Middlesex coach Bob Morris is the meet director. He says the invitational as one of the biggest athletic events held in Mercer County and Western Pennsylvania each year.
The West Middlesex boys and girls teams each won their races last year in the Red Division for larger enrollment schools. Adam Shrawder of West Middlesex was the individual winner in the boys race, and Bethany Walker of Ellwood City won the girls race.
West Middlesex already showed that it has two strong teams this season. The boys and girls team both finished first at last Saturday’s Hornet Harrier Invitational at Hickory.
In the White Division for smaller schools, North East’s Garrett Gray returns to defend his individual title and he will try to help the Grapepickers to another first place finish. Kacey Gibson of Neshannock was the individual girls winner, while Union City won the girls team title.
The first of eight races begins at 9 p.m., with each subsequent race starting about 5 minutes following the conclusion of the previous race.
Here is the order of races with the distance:
Middle school girls, 1.6 miles
Middle school boys, 1.6 miles
Varsity white girls, 3.1 miles
Varsity red girls, 3.1 miles
Varsity white boys, 3.1 miles
Junior varsity girls, 1.6 miles
Junior varsity boys, 1.6 miles

n The PTFCA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be contested at Penn State on March 1, two days before the PIAA allows teams to begin practicing for the outdoor season.
The McDowell boys won the 2007 championship, and then went on to win the PIAA Class AAAA outdoor championship at Shippensburg, as well.
PTFCA watches will be awarded to athletes who win events, and medals will go to athletes finishing second through eighth. In addition, award will be given to the top three teams.

Mike Copper's Crawford County Calls

Week Two Record: 6-3
Overall: 11-4

Week Three Football Previews
Friday
Region 1
Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles (0-1, 0-1) at Conneaut Lake Indians (0-1, 0-2), Conneaut Lake Field, 7 p.m.
An extra week to prepare for their season opener didn't help Kennedy. The Golden Eagles only had 116 yards in total offense and committed four turnovers in last Saturday's 47-0 loss to Linesville.
That game could be an ominous sign for new coach Joe Kenneally. Kennedy graduated the brunt of its skill players from last season's District 10 Class A playoff team.
They could right themselves against another winless team in the region. Conneaut Lake will seek its first victory after it was dominated in losses to Saegertown and Lakeview.
The senior experience of quarterback Matt Morian and running back Cash Horne should make the difference.
Prediction: Conneaut Lake 27, Kennedy Catholic 13.

Region 2
Cambridge Springs Blue Devils (0-1, 1-1) at Youngsville Eagles (0-1, 0-2), Shine Field, 7 p.m.
Ouch.
The Cambridge Springs faithful aren't used to the kind of home losses the Blue Devils sustained last Friday.
Eisenhower scored touchdowns off five of Cambridge Springs' six turnovers in a 49-6 victory at Baird Memorial Field. Justin Shader averted a shutout when he scored on a 1-yard run in the second half.
Youngsville is in even more dire shape. The Eagles have been outscored 72-0 through their first two games, including last Friday's 29-0 region final at Maplewood.
Cambridge Springs plays on the road three of the next four weeks. This game should be a positive way to start that stretch.
Prediction: Cambridge Springs 28, Youngsville 6.

Conneaut Valley Indians (0-1, 0-2) at Iroquois Braves (0-1, 0-2), Iroquois Field, 7 p.m.
Two former Metro League coaches trade calls in this one.
The Indians' Jeff Dahlstrand was East's head coach for three seasons, while the Braves' Mike Mischler was Cathedral Prep's head coach when the Ramblers won the PIAA Class AAAA title in 2000.
Mischler's current team isn't anywhere close to that goal. Iroquois hasn't scored through its first two games, which included last Friday's 20-0 region loss at Saegertown.
They should take care of their scoring and winning problems against Conneaut Valley, which allowed nearly 300 rushing yards to Mercyhurst Prep in a 42-16 loss.
Prediction: Iroquois 22, Conneaut Valley 13.

Region 5
Franklin Knights (0-1, 1-1) at Meadville Bulldogs (1-0, 1-1), Bender Field, 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs didn't win a playoff game, but celebrated they had when they beat Warren 28-25 last Friday at Bender Field. Meadville ended a 15-game losing streak, the longest in its nearly 100 seasons of play.
The Bulldogs' victory was even more special given the circumstances. Running back Nick Fedorka sat out the game due to illness. That forced coach Mike Pendolino to shift quarterback Jon Roncolato into Fedorka's role and start sophomore Jarrod Kilburn behind center.
Kilburn defied his inexperience and threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Whether he starts again in light of Fedorka's situation remains to be seen.
Franklin solved Titusville's tough defense last Friday, but it wasn't enough in a 42-18 home loss. Meadville should be aware of wide receiver Tyler Bittner, who caught two touchdown passes vs. the Rockets.
Prediction: Meadville 20, Franklin 15.

Oil City Oilers (0-0, 0-2) at Titusville Rockets (1-0, 2-0), Carter Stadium, 7 p.m.
The Rockets' offense and special teams aren't shabby either.
Titusville rushed for 245 yards in last Friday's 42-18 victory at Franklin. Derek Carr accounted for 167 of them and scored the team's first four touchdowns.
John Proano scored the fifth when he returned the second-half kickoff 83 yards for a 35-0 lead.
The Oilers trailed Harbor Creek by the same score before they lost 35-14. Oil City would be wise to avoid such a deficit against the defending region champs.
Prediction: Titusville 34, Oil City 13.

Non-region
Linesville Lions (2-0) at Saegertown Panthers (2-0), Canon Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
The only thing that would make this one more anticipated was if it were a region matchup. No matter, the Lions and Panthers should make for an exciting early-season contest.
The former French Creek Valley Conference rivals are off to juggernaut starts.
Linesville outscored Conneaut Valley and Kennedy Catholic by a combined 96-0. The Lions' Doug Williams and Doug Farley rushed for more than 100 yards in both games, which included Farley's 171-yard effort in last Saturday's 47-0 win at Kennedy.
Saegertown proved its has more weapons than quarterback Zach Beatty and running backs Ian Price and Kyle Crum. Converted wide receiver Cody McCray rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Drew Perry caught a 60-yard pass and recovered two fumbles in the Panthers' 20-0 victory over Iroquois.
If both teams continue to play like this, a rematch in the District 10 Class A playoffs would be plausible.
Prediction: Saegertown 27, Linesville 21.

Saturday
Region 1
Cochranton Cardinals (0-1, 1-1) at Mercer Mustangs (0-0, 1-1), Mercer Stadium, 7 p.m.
This could be a gauge about the Cardinals' true talent. Cochranton rolled visiting Maplewood 34-12 in its season opener, but was shut out 44-0 at West Middlesex last Friday.
Justin Angermeier was the difference in Mercer's 28-14 victory over Girard. Angermeier rushed for 194 yards and broke a fourth-quarter tie game with two touchdown runs.
Stopping the Mustangs' talented back will be Cochranton's main challenge.
Prediction: Mercer 28, Cochranton 13.

Region 2
Maplewood Tigers (1-0, 1-1) at Mercyhurst Prep Lakers (1-0, 2-0), Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.
The Tigers will make a rare appearance in Erie to play the defending region champions.
Maplewood won its home opener with last Friday's 29-0 victory over Youngsville. The Tigers had nine different ball carriers in that game, topped by Nick Garcia's 95 yards and a touchdown. Jeremy Dunn scored two others.
The Tigers will need similar ground success if they are to beat the Lakers.
Mercyhurst rushed for nearly 300 yards in last Friday's 42-16 region win at Conneaut Valley. Lakers quarterback Marshall Huntsman also was an efficient 4-of-6 passing for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Prediction: Mercyhurst Prep 34, Maplewood 14.

Mike Copper's Crawford County Calls

Week Three Record: 8-0
Overall: 19-4

Week Four Football Previews
Thursday
Region 2
Youngsville Eagles (0-2, 0-3) at Saegertown Panthers (1-0, 3-0), at Canon Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
The Panthers should have an easier time against the Eagles than they did against Linesville.
Saegertown, led by the four-touchdown performance of running back Ian Price, won a wild 34-32 final over the Lions last Friday. That non-region game proved both teams are worthy of District 10 Class A berths in the playoffs, where a rematch could take place.
The Eagles have had trouble scoring, let alone winning. That, plus a short week to prepare for the Panthers, doesn’t figure to improve Youngsville’s plight.
Prediction: Saegertown 43, Youngsville 6.

Friday
Region 1
Conneaut Lake Indians (1-1, 1-2) at Cochranton Cardinals (0-2, 1-2), Cochranton Field, 7 p.m.
After putting 34 points on the scoreboard in their opener against Maplewood, the Cardinals have been grounded on offense. Cochranton was shut out by West Middlesex and only scored six points in last Saturday’s loss at Mercer.
Cochranton will need to fix that to beat Conneaut Lake. The Indians have averaged 20 points per game, topped by last Friday’s 24-7 victory over Kennedy Catholic.
Look for Conneaut Lake to exceed that total.
Prediction: Conneaut Lake 28, Cochranton 12.

Linesville Lions (1-0, 2-1) at Sharpsville Blue Devils (1-1, 1-2), McCracken Field, 7 p.m.
The bad news for the Lions? They allowed 450 yards in offense to Saegertown last Friday.
Linesville took an early 14-0 lead over the Panthers, but couldn’t hold on to it in a 34-32 shootout.
The good news for Linesville was that the loss came in a non-region game. They can’t afford that against Sharpsville, which beat defending region champ West Middlesex last Saturday.
The Blue Devils scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half en route to a 28-6 victory. Sharpsville’s Josh Taylor scored two of those TDs and also intercepted two passes in the half.
Prediction: Linesville 30, Sharpsville 26.

Region 2
Eisenhower Knights (2-0, 3-0) at Conneaut Valley Indians (0-2, 0-3), Clements Field, 7 p.m.
Wide receiver Ben Varee returned to the Indians’ lineup last Friday, but he wasn’t enough to get them their first win. Conneaut Valley took an early 14-6 at Iroquois, but lost 35-21.
The Indians will host the early leader in Region 2.
Eisenhower scored five touchdowns in the second quarter at Union City. Ben Wilston scored three of them and totaled 184 yards on the ground in a 55-20 victory.
Expect similar numbers for Wilston and the Knights in this one.
Prediction: Eisenhower 29, Conneaut Valley 13.

Union City Bears (0-1, 0-3) at Maplewood Tigers (1-1, 1-2), Maplewood Stadium, 7 p.m.
The Bears conclude a three-game road trip with a short bus ride to Guys Mills. Union City was blown out in losses to Seneca and Eisenhower, teams with strong playoff potential.
Maplewood isn’t quite at the level of the Bobcats and Knights, but they should have enough to recover from last Saturday’s loss against Mercyhurst Prep.
Prediction: Maplewood 23, Union City 14.

Region 5
Meadville Bulldogs (2-0, 2-1) at Titusville Rockets (2-0, 3-0), Carter Stadium, 7 p.m.
When the season started, it looked like a mismatch between rivals.
Not anymore.
The Bulldogs proved their week two victory over Warren was no fluke. Meadville played without running back Nick Fedorka for the second straight game, but still beat Franklin 32-13 last Friday at Bender Field.
The Rockets come into the game off a 41-0 rout of Oil City. Titusville never trailed after Derek Carr returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Carr finished with 122 yards rushing and scored four times. How he fares should determine the winner and region leader.
Prediction: Titusville 22, Meadville 15.

Non-region
West Middlesex Big Red (1-2) at Cambridge Springs Blue Devils (2-1), Baird Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
The Big Red will venture north for their first road game. Last season’s PIAA Class A finalist couldn’t take advantage of its three-game home stand, with only a victory over Cochranton to show for it.
Cambridge Springs won its first road game with last Friday’s 22-8 final at Youngsville. Corey Dunton and Justin Shader each rushed for more than 100 yards, while Dunton scored all three of the Blue Devils’ touchdowns.
A non-region victory would give Cambridge Springs a .500 record. It also would help going into the meat of the Blue Devils’ Region 2 schedule.
Prediction: Cambridge Springs 18, West Middlesex 14.
