Week Nine Record: 6-1
Overall: 55-12
Week 10 Previews
Friday
Region 1
Conneaut Lake Indians (5-4, 4-3) at Linesville Lions (6-3, 5-2), Linesville Field, 7 p.m.
The District 10 Class A playoffs start next week, but don’t tell that to the Indians.
Conneaut Lake’s season will likely end without a win. A loss would leave them with .500 records overall and within the region.
Lakeview (5-4, 3-4) is on the outside at this point, but finishes with Friday’s winnable home game against West Middlesex.
What also helps the Sailors is their 49-20 victory over Conneaut Lake on Sept. 7. That victory could serve as a tiebreaker in the eyes of the district’s football committee.
Linesville also complicates Conneaut Lake’s predicament. The Lions should receive an at-large berth even if they lose, but could get a higher playoff seed with a win over the Indians.
Prediction: Linesville 24, Conneaut Lake 20.
Region 2
Iroquois Braves (5-4, 5-2) at Maplewood Tigers (3-6, 3-4), Maplewood Stadium, 7 p.m.
Like Linesville, the Braves should get a berth in the eight-team A playoff field. Iroquois can close its regular season with consecutive road wins over Union City and Maplewood.
That could be more difficult than the Braves once thought.
Maplewood exceeded its 2006 victory total with last Friday’s 28-15 victory over Conneaut Valley. A win as a spoiler would end the Tigers’ season on an ecstatic note.
Prediction: Iroquois 24, Maplewood 18.
Mercyhurst Prep Lakers (9-0, 7-0) at Cambridge Springs Blue Devils (4-5, 3-4), Baird Memorial Field, 7 p.m.
The Lakers are one of three teams in the district who seek perfect regular seasons. It would be the second straight year Mercyhurst achieved the feat.
Cambridge Springs is a long shot to get the district’s eighth playoff berth. Saegertown significantly hurt the Blue Devils’ chances with last Friday’s dramatic 22-21 victory.
Prediction: Mercyhurst Prep 30, Cambridge Springs 22.
Saegertown Panthers (8-1, 6-1) at Conneaut Valley Indians (3-6, 3-4), Clements Field, 7 p.m.
The Panthers certainly earned their fourth straight victory. Saegertown made not one, but two goal line stands in its victory over Cambridge Springs.
A win over Conneaut Valley would give the Panthers the best record of any at-large team in the district’s A playoffs. Their only loss was to Region 2 champion Mercyhurst Prep on Sept. 27.
Conneaut Valley seeks a mild upset to close Jeff Dahlstrand’s first season. A win would give the team its best record since 2003,when the Indians went 7-3 and made the playoffs.
Prediction: Saegertown 28, Conneaut Valley 13.
Non-region
Meadville Bulldogs (5-4) at Strong Vincent Colonels (7-2), Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.
For a team that held the district’s longest losing streak early in the season, a .500 record or better should be a positive for the Bulldogs.
It’s doubtful Meadville feels that way.
For the Bulldogs to have any chance at the fourth berth in the District 10 Class AAA playoffs, they must beat the Colonels on the road and hope that Warren upsets Slippery Rock in their Region 5 game. That would leave the Rock at 5-5 overall and potentially negate its 13-6 victory over Meadville on Oct. 20.
Vincent is assured a AAA berth out of Region 6, but the Colonels need to maintain all the momentum they can get. A game against General McLane or Titusville likely looms in the near future.
Prediction: Strong Vincent 27, Meadville 21.
Titusville Rockets (8-0) at General McLane Lancers (7-2), Linden Field, 7 p.m.
The Rockets have long clinched the Region 5 title and a AAA playoff berth. Yet this non-region game will be the biggest of Titusville’s year.
Titusville seeks its first undefeated regular season in 50 years. More important, the Rockets could clear a huge psychological hurdle with a victory over the defending state champions.
McLane damaged Meadville’s chances at the playoffs with last Friday’s 35-21 victory at Bender Field. A win over the Rockets would send a message it’s still the team to beat in November.
Prediction: General McLane 28, Titusville 22.
