Strong start for Mercyhurst Prep

Pitcher Shane Hodapp and the Mercyhurst Prep baseball team had a memorable first week of the Region 3 season.
The Lakers opened with a 7-3 victory over Girard on Wednesday when Hodapp pitched five innings of two-hit ball. He struck out nine and allowed two runs.
Mercyhurst moved to 2-0 overall and in the region Saturday with a dramatic 1-0 victory over North East at Ainsworth Field. Hodapp improved to 2-0 as he tossed a two-hitter, striking out six and walking three. The only run came on Chris Henry’s inside-the-park homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
North East’s Eric Meehl (1-1) took the loss despite pitching a four-hitter. Henry's homer was the first run Meehl has allowed this season in 10 2/3 innings.

Region 3 softball race should be fun to watch

It should be another highly competitive and exciting race in Region 3 softball this season, with at least three teams figuring to be District 10 Class AA title contenders.
Last year, Northwestern won the region title, and region runner-up Iroquois claimed the D-10 AA crown.
Villa Maria, last year’s third-place team, made an early season statement Monday with a 6-1 victory over Iroquois. Two of the region’s biggest stars showed off their talents, as reigning District 10 Player of the Year Becky Zill hit a first-inning home run off Villa ace Ali Grab. Grab recovered to shut out the Braves the rest of the way. She added a two-run homer.
Fort LeBoeuf also could make a playoff run, while teams such as Fairview, Seneca and North East hope to move up into the top half of the region.
The region’s next big matchup takes place Thursday when Iroquois faces Northwestern, which is led by ace Jenny Cox.

Iroquois' Zill moves up in order

If you've been reading the Iroquois softball box scores, you might have noticed that junior catcher Becky Zill has changed her spot in the batting order.

Zill, the 2007 Times-News District 10 Player of the Year, batted in the third spot in the Braves' first two games. But after Zill walked twice against Harbor Creek, Iroquois coach Julie Parker moved her to the leadoff spot. The thought is that teams cannot pitch around her when she leads off the game.

Zill slammed a home run, flew out and grounded out against Villa on Monday. On Tuesday, she was hit by a pitch, walked and was 1-for-2 against Fort LeBoeuf.

Titusville junior is definitely Atha-letic

It can be debated if Cameron Atha is the best athlete on Titusville's track and field team. But let there be no doubt he was the busiest.

Atha, a junior, won four events for the Rockets in their Region 3 dual against Meadville on Tuesday. Titusville improved to 3-0 overall with an 86 1/2-63 1/2 victory over the rival Bulldogs.

Atha won three individual events, the 110-meter hurdles (15.7 seconds), the triple jump (39 feet, 8 inches) and the high jump (5-10). He also led for the Rockets' winning 1,600 relay team (3:43.9).

Titusville will compete in Saturday's Center High School Invitational at Monaca.

Cathedral Prep, McDowell start 6-1

As usual, the Cathedral Prep-McDowell baseball rivalry appears to be an evenly matched one this season.
Both teams have opened at 6-1. The first showdown between the two will take place a week from today, April 18, when the teams play under the lights at Jerry Uht Park at 7 p.m. The Ramblers and Trojans also will close the regular season with a night game at Jerry Uht Park on May 14.
McDowell opened the season by winning its first six games before losing to reigning District 10 Class AAA champion Hickory 4-3 Thursday.
Prep, which beat Titusville 13-6 Thursday, suffered its only loss of the season against Mt. Dora High School, 5-4, in Orlando, Fla., on March 24.

Morse's code: Effective, if not fast

A speed merchant Eric Morse is not. Northwestern baseball coach John Light confessed as much.
Which is why Light’s pulse beat faster late in Monday’s home game against Seneca.
The Wildcats beat the Bobcats 5-4 in a Region 3 game at Albion. They scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Morse, the team’s designated hitter, barely scored from third base after a passed ball.
Morse began the winning rally with a one-out single off Seneca reliever Mike Dunn. Artie McCumber followed with a double to right-center field, but Morse couldn't score on the play.
The Wildcats’ D.J. Haffley struck out as a pinch-hitter and David Bihler walked to load the bases.
That’s when Morse lumbered home when Seneca catcher Sam Hubbard allowed the passed ball.
“The slowest kid on our team made it interesting,” a relieved Light said.
Morse had one of Northwestern's seven hits. Marcus Paradise's RBI double tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth.
The win left Northwestern 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the region. Seneca dropped to 1-3 and 0-2.

Seneca rallies for Region 3 baseball win

The Seneca baseball team earned its first Region 3 victory in dramatic fashion Tuesday.
Andy Cole's sacrifice-bunt attempt led to an error and two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Bobcats beat visiting Youngsville 9-8.
Aaron Zaksheske led Seneca (2-6 overall, 1-2 Region 3) with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Ben Smith had two hits, including a double, and a RBI, while Sam Hubbard had two hits and two runs scored.
Ben Oviatt led Youngsville (0-6, 0-3) with a single, double and three RBIs. Adam Paden added a home run and two RBIs.

Trio of diamond triple doubles

A three-double performance by a baseball or softball player is a rare occurrence. In a statistical anomaly Wednesday, three area high school players each hit three doubles in a game.
Joe Stelter of Girard achieved the feat in the YellowJackets’ 11-4 win over Youngsville in a Region 3 baseball game. A leadoff hitter, Stelter went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.
Eric Meehl of North East hit three doubles in the Grapepickers’ 12-7 win over Fort LeBoeuf in Region 3 play. Meehl, who also hits leadoff, finished 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Softball player Tera Deniziak of Strong Vincent, meanwhile, ripped three doubles in an 11-2 non-region win over Warren. Deniziak, hitting second in the order, went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and one RBI.

Seeking athletes' musical tastes for April 30 Varsity

Capital One asks, “What’s in your wallet?”
I’m asking, “What’s in your iPod?”
What do you listen to before a game?
Is it heavy metal in the locker room for football?
Is it hip-hop prior to warm-up drills for basketball?
How about classical en route to the golf course?
Is it any of these musical genres? Is it none of them?
Music before games — and even during them — has become a given in most sporting events. That includes high school athletics, where players are often seen with an ear piece that blares their favorite music and tunes.
I want to know what they are, and if their psychological effects work, for an April 30 story in Varsity.
If you’d like your share your thoughts, please leave leave a jingle with your name, sport and contact number at 814 870-1614. You can also e-mail me at mike.copper@timesnews.com.

Zill has competition for D-10's top softball award

It will take a heck of an effort from an area softball player to stop Iroquois’ Becky Zill from repeating as the Times-News District 10 Player of the Year.
But Villa Maria’s Ali Grab and Cambridge Springs’ Stephanie Baer are giving it their best shot early in the season.
That’s not to say that Zill isn’t off to a hot start. She has led the Braves to a 7-1 record even though opponents are trying to pitch around her. In her latest game Wednesday, she went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in a 12-0 victory over Youngsville, as Iroquois moved to 6-1 in Region 3.
Zill hit a leadoff homer against Villa earlier this season, but Grab blasted a two-run homer and pitched a two-hitter to lead the Victors to a key 6-1 victory. Grab has pitched every game this season while leading Villa to a 9-0 start (7-0 in Region 3). She's been a force at the plate, too.
Baer is dominating Region 2 as a pitcher and hitter for Cambridge Springs. She led the Blue Devils (8-0, 8-0) to an 8-2 victory over rival Union City (7-1, 7-1) Wednesday in a battle for first place in the region. Baer struck out 10 while allowing only two seventh-inning runs.
Other area players are off to outstanding starts, too, but Zill, Grab and Baer are the early leaders for this year’s D-10 Player of the Year award.

Trojans outslug Ramblers at the Uht

Round one went to McDowell.

By a first-inning knockout too.

The Trojans' baseball team sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning Friday night against rival Cathedral Prep. The first six all reached and all scored, which highlighted their 10-3 victory at Jerry Uht Park.

More than 1,100 saw the first of three regular-season meetings between the rivals. McDowell improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 6, while Prep dropped to 7-3 and 1-1.

Matt Luthringer and Ryan Skellie each doubled and had two hits off Ramblers' pitching. Skellie drove also drove in two runs and scored twice.

Tyler DeCrapio settled down after Prep scored twice in the first inning and pitched a complete game.

Prep, the defending District 10 Class AAAA champions, was led by Bryan Colish and Kyle Laughner. Colish had two of the Ramblers' six hits and Laughner had two RBIs.

The teams will meet at McDowell on April 30 and return to Jerry Uht Park on May 14.

Prep-McDowell rivalry comes to tennis courts

It’s not football.
It’s not basketball.
But it is Cathedral Prep vs. McDowell.
So regardless of the sport — in this case tennis — the matchup is bound to draw interest.
The Ramblers and Trojans will play on McDowell’s courts today at 4 p.m. The best-of-five matches will be the first of two meetings between the rivals in less than a week.
Prep heads to Millcreek Township at 8-0 overall and in Region 2. The Ramblers were not only victorious three times last week, but won every match in straight sets.
McDowell prepared for Prep with Monday’s 5-0 victory at Corry. That left the Trojans 9-1 overall and 7-0 within the region.
The loser won’t have to wait long for the rematch. The Ramblers and Trojans will play Monday at 4 p.m. at the Frontier Park courts.

It’s quite a race in Region 3 baseball

Who’s going to win the District 10 Region 3 baseball title?
Who knows?
Going into Tuesday’s games, there was still a clump of teams with region title aspirations. Unlike many other baseball and softball regions, no team has emerged as a clear favorite.
Consider this: Villa Maria entered Monday’s game leading Region 3 with a 3-1 record. When Mercyhurst Prep rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and pulled out a 5-4 win Monday, Villa Maria (3-2) dropped to fifth.
Iroquois and North East both won Monday to move into a first-place tie at 5-2. Right behind them, Mercyhurst Prep and Girard are tied for third at 4-2. Villa is fifth followed by Fort LeBoeuf and Northwestern, who are in a sixth-place tie at 4-3.
Each of those teams is in the title hunt … and each could finish seventh. It’s that close.
Others, such as Eisenhower and Fairview, are right behind.
Stay tuned.

Early trip sets stage for Corry

Does heading South to get a jump-start on the baseball or softball season help a high school team?
For the Corry softball team, it did.
The Beavers played four games in Florida and Tennessee this spring before returning home. Corry was 2-2 on its trip.
Since then, the Beavers have gone 4-1. Their only loss was to DuBois, 3-0 on Saturday.
Corry currently leads Region 5 with a 3-0 record.

Craziest game of the spring

The wildest game of the District 10 baseball season took place at Seneca High School on Wednesday when Seneca rallied for a remarkable 21-20 victory over Eisenhower in Region 3 play.
The teams combined for 41 runs and 40 hits. They scored a total of 13 runs in the eighth inning alone.
“I’ve been coaching a long time, and I’ve never experienced anything quite like that,” Seneca coach Tom Mello said.
Eisenhower led 10-9 through two innings, and the game only got crazier.
The teams were tied 14-14 going into extra innings when Eisenhower struck for six runs in the top of the eighth. The win looked to be secure for the Knights.
Not so.
The Bobcats then rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
“Quite honestly, I thought we were done, but the way that game was going, anything was possible,” Mello said.
The tying and winning runs scored with one out when an Eisenhower player overthrew first base for an error, and the ball rolled down the right-field line.
Seneca’s Jake Trott entered the game in relief in the top of the eighth with no outs, four runs already in and two Eisenhower runners on base. Trott retired the side on four pitches – both runners scored – and, as it turns out, he got an unlikely victory.

Region 3 softball teams play 2

There was a rare occurrence in District 10 softball Friday -- not one but two doubleheaders in Region 3.
District 10 softball teams rarely play doubleheaders, but Friday Fairview played Youngsville twice and North East played Eisenhower twice.
Both doubleheaders were set up to accommodate makeup games from earlier rainouts. Because both Eisenhower and Youngsville are a good distance from Erie County, school officials decided to play doubleheaders rather than schedule an extra trip for the teams.
By the way, Eisenhower swept North East 11-6 and 12-8, while Fairview swept Youngsville 2-1 and 6-3.

Phillips enjoys memorable week

It’s been an amazing week for Iroquois softball pitcher Lindsey Phillips.
She started the week with a four-hitter in an 8-0 win over Seneca in Region 3 play Monday. She struck out 15 in that game.
Phillips followed with a two-hitter and seven more strikeouts Wednesday in a 1-0 win against a solid Northwestern team.
Friday she had capped her week with another 15-strikeout performance in a 1-0 victory over third-place Fort LeBoeuf. She tossed a two-hitter this time.
For the week, Phillips went 3-0 with no runs allowed in 21 innings pitched. She struck out 37 and walked — get this — none. She allowed eight total hits, all singles.
Her efforts helped the second-place Braves move to 11-1 overall and 10-1 in the region.

Eight were enough for D-10 tennis qualifier

Class AA tennis powers Fairview and Hickory claimed two of eight berths available during Saturday's District 10 Class AA qualifier at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. The Tigers advanced Jake Batchelor and David Gorman to the boys singles tournament, while the Hornets sent Ryan McCann and Ryan Zippie.

Others who made the postseason were Grove City's Luke Spears and Chris Chutz, Mark Grant of General McLane, and Adrian Shodi of Warren.

Fairview sophomore Thomas Shuttleworth was named the AA tournament's top seed after the qualifier. The Class AAA seeds will be determined Saturday, prior to the tournament's 8:45 a.m. start.

The AA and AAA finals will take place at the Pennbriar on May 5 at 3:30 p.m.

Blue Devils begin busy week on softball diamond

The Cambridge Springs softball team would be wise to scrub the remnants of Saturday's dramatic loss to Warren from their collective psyche.

Stephanie Baer was one out from a perfect game when the Dragons' Lindsay Thomas singled off the Blue Devils' pitcher. Before Baer could recover, Danielle Dorunda followed with a two-run home run that produced Warren's shocking 2-1 victory.

The back-to-back hits not only ruined Baer's bid for perfection, but Cambridge Springs' bid for a perfect record. The Blue Devils' dropped to 12-1 overall.

Cambridge Springs must rebound with three games in three days, starting with today's 4 p.m. matchup at Conneaut Valley. The Blue Devils travel to Conneautville at 12-0 in Region 2, a half-game better than Union City (12-1, 12-1).

Cochranton (9-4, 9-4) and Conneaut Valley (8-4, 8-4) are desperately chasing those teams for what likely amounts to the region's lone Class A at-large berth for the District 10 playoffs.

After today, Cambridge Springs visits Class AA power Iroquois on Wednesday. Their busy run ends Thursday with a region home game vs. Linesville.

McDowell takes Region 2 tennis title

The McDowell boys tennis team claimed the Region 2 title Monday with a 3-2 victory over Cathedral Prep at Frontier Park.
The Trojans also established themselves as the favorite to win the District 10 Class AAA team title.
McDowell (14-1, 10-0) swept the singles matches as Landon Williams, Chris Galvin and Kevin Ricart all posted straight-set wins.
The Ramblers (9-2, 9-1) received doubles wins from the teams of Jeff Demjanenko-Alex Kanonczyk and Gary Pasqualicchio-Pat Gordon.
McDowell had beaten Prep 4-1 on April 22 in non-region dual.

Conneaut Valley tightens Region 2 softball standings

Suddenly, the Cambridge Springs softball team is reeling.

The Blue Devils' 12-0 start has given way to a two-game losing streak. The second came Tuesday, when Conneaut Valley rallied for a 4-2 victory that kept the Indians in contention for a District 10 Class A playoff berth.

Amanda Mahoney's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a three-run rally for Conneaut Valley, which moved to 9-4 overall and within the region. Cambridge Springs, which lost a non-region game to Warren on Saturday, dropped to 12-1 in the region.

Fort LeBoeuf deals with injuries to freshman contributors

The Fort LeBoeuf softball team, now 9-4 overall and 8-4 in Region 3, could end the season with losses to only Villa Maria and Iroquois and still not make the Class AA playoffs.
That is only part of the Bisons' problems.
Two key freshman infielders, Taylor Welch and Allison Litz, suffered season-ending injuries.
Welch was hitting .500 with four doubles, two homers and a triple when she injured her elbow in a 1-0 loss to Iroquois on April 25.
Litz played only seven games before a shin injury put her on the bench. Her numbers included a .300 average with one double and one triple.
