Depth keys Fairview track victory

Three 6-0 teams. One tri-meet. One Region 4 boys track and field title on the line.
It was quite a showdown Tuesday at North East’s track, where Fairview, North East and Fort LeBoeuf each entered the final tri-meet of the Region 4 season with a 6-0 region dual-meet record.
In the end, it was Fairview that walked away with the region championship. The Tigers beat North East 91-59 and defeated Fort LeBoeuf 89-61.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Fairview’s win was that the Tigers pulled off the sweep without one their best athletes. Tyler Sargent, a top sprinter and jumper, missed the tri-meet because of a sore hamstring.
Sam Havko led Fairview by winning the 800 meters and 1,600 meters. He also ran on the winning 1,600 relay, along with Michael Taylor, Mike Banda and Ryan Hearst. Taylor won the 200 as well, while Kevin McAleer added a win in the 100.
The victory is reminiscent of Fairview’s boys and girls region swimming titles this past winter when the Tigers overwhelmed opponents with quality depth.
Fairview is scheduled to compete in the Baldwin Invitational on Friday, the North East Invitational on Saturday, the County Classic on May 8-9 and the District 10 meet on May 17. The Tigers are hoping to have Sargent back for the D-10 meet, if not sooner.
