Don’t weep for the loser of today’s 4 p.m. softball game between Union City and Cambridge Springs. Yes, the winner will clinch the Region 2 championship, but any consoling pats on the back should be for the teams immediately below the Bears and Blue Devils.
While Union City and Cambridge Springs are each 16-1 in region play, Cochranton and Conneaut Valley are each 12-5. The District 10 Class A tournament will start with four teams, but that’s not the problem for the Cardinals and Indians.
No, their problem is that one team must come from Region 1 (Kennedy Catholic) and one from Region 3 (Eisenhower or Youngsville). Kennedy Catholic begins the week 8-6 overall, while Eisenhower and Youngsville have losing records.
The district's decision to go with region representation should not only make Union City and Cambridge Springs strong favorites in the A semifinals, but assure today’s loser a strong chance at payback in the Memorial Day title game.
