Fairview's Batchelor sentimental choice for D-10 AA final

No doubt Fairview fans will neutrally root during Monday's District 10 Class AA singles final between Jake Batchelor and Johnathan Knoll. The Tigers duo will play for the title at 3:30 p.m. at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.

But privately, expect most to pull for Batchelor. The senior is the younger brother of Chris Batchelor, whose name has adorned Fairview's tennis courts since 2003.

Chris Batchelor, a freshman tennis player at the school, died in his sleep April 18, 2001. The official cause of death was heart failure.

His parents, Tammy and Mike Batchelor, were members of the Fairview School Foundation, which initiated construction of the courts through private donations and fund raisers. An estimated $295,000 was needed to make the facility a reality.

Also scheduled today is the Class AAA final between McDowell's Landon Williams and Chris Galvin. The Trojans' teammates won the district's doubles title in 2007, but won't repeat because PIAA rules prohibit players from competing in both the state singles and doubles tournaments.
