Fairview's Thomas Shuttleworth, the top-ranked Class AA player in the District 10 boys singles tennis tournament, was one of four seeds who lost in the early rounds Saturday.
Hickory senior Ryan Zippie, bound for the Penn State Behrend tennis team next spring, eliminated Shuttleworth 8-6 in the second round. Other seeded players who were upset prior to the quarterfinals were No. 3 T.J. McGary of Greenville, No. 6 Sam Birgel of Warren and No. 7 Dennis Russell of Girard.
The AA quarterfinals began around 4:45 p.m. Among the Erie County players still alive for the title were Jake Batchelor and eighth-seeded Jonathan Knoll, Shuttleworth's teammates at Fairview, and fourth seed Dan Mulligan of General McLane.
McDowell was assured the Class AAA champion when Landon Williams and Chris Galvin advanced to Monday's final. The Trojans' duo were the top two seeds in that bracket.
The AA and AAA finals will start Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Pennbriar.
