Iroquois softball preview

PIAA Class AA quarterfinals

Iroquois Braves (District 10 second seed: 19-5)
vs. Everett Warriors (District 5 champion: 19-2)

When: Today, 2 p.m.

Where: Fairhaven Park, McKees Rocks

What’s at stake: The winner will play Bald Eagle Area or Washington in Monday’s semifinals

Scouting Iroquois: Coached by Julie Parker, the Braves were the only non-district champion that advanced to the tournament’s second round. Iroquois went on the road for Monday’s 2-1 victory over WPIAL champion Riverside at Wexford. The Braves tied the game on Sara Johnson’s RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, then took the lead in the sixth when Karey Bartlett reached and later scored on an infield error. Johnson and Bartlett had two of the Braves’ five hits off Riverside ace Kari Falk. … Becky Zill went 1-for-3 vs. Riverside. Zill remains Iroquois’ best threat with a .424 average, five home runs and 19 RBIs. Brittany Tombaugh is hitting .373 with nine doubles and 18 RBIs. Braves pitcher Lindsey Phillips allowed an unearned run, gave up four hits, walked one and struck out 11. The junior enters the quarterfinals with a 17-5 record, a 1.03 ERA and 218 strikeouts. … Several of Iroquois’ starters were on the 2006 team that lost to Blue Ridge 1-0 in the Class A state final. The Braves were reassigned to AA last season, where Philipsburg-Osceola eliminated them 2-0 in the PIAA quarters.

Scouting Everett:
Coached by Junior Bennett, the Warriors weren’t the first team that qualified for the quarterfinals. But they were the fastest to qualify, thanks to Monday’s 14-3, five-inning victory over Moniteau at Brockway High School. Macy Foor, Jess Beegle and Andrea Layton each had two hits, with Layton also good for a triple, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Zill could be busy behind the plate, since Everett stole six bases against Moniteau. … Layton has pitched with a brace on her left knee. The senior tore her anterior cruciate ligament during the basketball season, but recovered enough to be the team’s ace (14 wins) and hit cleanup (.490 average). Seniors Amy Miller and Sara Clark both have hit over .500. Third baseman Morgan Barkman and Amanda Clark have had success advancing runners at the bottom of Everett’s lineup. … The Warriors won the District 5 AA title for the third straight season.
