Look out for these guys

Some big names have been talked about during the preseason – McDowell’s A.J. Fenton, Strong Vincent’s Deonte Flemings and General McLane’s Kellen O’Neill – but many other players around District 10 appear ready to have big years. Here are a few:

Billy Sobucki, Girard: He’s only 5 feet 7 inches and 167 pounds, but he brings a full load when he runs. The YellowJackets’ standout is the third-leading returning rusher in District 10 after piling up 1,038 yards on 207 rushes as a sophomore last season. If his line gives him some room, Sobucki could post some big numbers.

Louis Neff, North East: Neff is similar to Sobucki – he’s not big, but he can play. The 5-10, 175-pounder rushed for 874 yards and nine TDs last season while averaging more than 6 yards per carry. The Grapepickers will rely on him heavily.

Jake Szoszorek, Iroquois: Again, Szoszorek isn’t overly large at 5-8, 198 pounds, but he’s a tackling machine. Szoszorek had 150 tackles last year as a sophomore and became the leader of the Braves’ defense. He’ll take on an expanded offensive role this season as the team’s starting quarterback.

Kaylon Mims, Central Tech: The Falcons have a rough 2007 season, but Mims performed well. The 5-9, 170-pound running back showed a knack for breaking big plays. If Central Tech’s line can give Mims any space to run, he’ll be a force.

Jarrod Kilburn, Meadville: The 5-11, 195-pound quarterback played a big role in helping the Bulldogs to an improved 5-5 record last season. He’s only a junior, so coach Mike Pendolino has Kilburn for two more seasons.

Pat Barber and Jeff Roach, Cathedral Prep: Both Prep quarterbacks received ample playing time last season because of injuries to the other. Both showed they can wing the football. Whichever player wins the majority of playing time this season should pile up big numbers, thanks to a talented group of receivers.

Ian Price, Saegertown: If you had a high school Fantasy Football team, Price might be the top pick in D-10 this year. He enters the season as the district’s leading returning rusher. He ran for 1,370 yards and 14 TDs in 2007 while averaging almost 10 yards per carry. Price could run wild against Region 2 teams.
