This could be considered the year of the receiver in District 10. Many of the top pass catchers are back, so expect big numbers – if the quarterbacks can get them the ball. Here’s a list of some of the top returning receivers:
1. Tyler Bittner, Franklin: He’s a 6-foot 2-inch all-state wideout with great hands. He had 83 catches last year, and his quarterback, Julian Wested, is back. Can Bittner catch 100? We’ll find out.
2. Shyquawn Pullium, Cathedral Prep: He proved he could be a big-play receiver. Now, we’ll see if Prep can get the ball in his hands regularly. The Ramblers have not announced their starting quarterback after a two-way battle in camp between Jeff Roach and Patrick Barber.
3. Robert Joyce, Strong Vincent: Like Pullium, Joyce is a big-play receiver who figures to be even more involved in the Colonels’ offense this year. He has two solid quarterbacks in D.J. Barney and Deonte Flemings.
4. Jeff Harvey, Iroquois: Harvey is small but has blazing speed. He had a number of long TDs on receptions and returns last season. The question will be if Iroquois can develop a passing game after the graduation of QB Andy Wallen.
5. Mitch McTavish, Warren: One of the top receivers in District 10 last season, McTavish could become a focal point of the Dragons’ offense this year.
Others to watch: Jon Root, Cathedral Prep; Dion Eilam, Farrell; Lucas Schwanke, Eisenhower; Jordan Mosher, Corry; Jason Ferderber (tight end), Grove City; Matt Wagner, Wilmington; Elrico Jones, Hickory.
