LeBoeuf legend Mahle scheduled for Sept. 19 ceremony

Fort LeBoeuf graduate Walley Mahle, one of the most celebrated athletes in Erie County history, will be feted by his alma mater Sept. 19.

LeBoeuf athletic director Dave Andrews announced that Mahle will be on hand for a halftime ceremony during the Bisons’ game vs. Maplewood at Carm Bonito Field. The 65-year old Mahle is undergoing radiation therapy for throat cancer, but hopes to speak during the event.

Mahle was a quarterback for LeBoeuf in the late 1950s and later starred at that same position for Syracuse. In 1965, the Green Bay Packers picked him in the NFL draft and the Oakland Raiders in the AFL draft.

Mahle later coached football at Syracuse, as well as for LeBoeuf and North East at the scholastic level. He’s a member of the Erie Metropolitan Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
