Loss will cost McDowell ranking

After routing Cathedral Prep 43-23 last week, the McDowell football team entered this week with a No. 10 Class AAAA ranking in the Harrisburg Patriot-News state poll.

That won't last after the Trojans' 38-33 loss to WPIAL foe Seneca Valley on Thursday.

McDowell's offense looked strong again as it piled up 386 yards, including 232 rushing. The Trojans actually scored on two of their first three plays as Dejon Young broke a 72-yard TD run and Alex Schmude had a 71-yard scoring run.

However, with Seneca Valley trailing 12-7, quarterback D.J. Brown led the Raiders on a run of 28 consecutive points to take a 35-12 lead. The Trojans rallied but could not catch up.

The road won't get much easier for McDowell, which must face a strong McKeesport team and the state's top-ranked team, Gateway, in upcoming weeks.
