No small problem in California

The football players at Rialto High School in Railto, Calif., don't have to worry about rain storms or heavy snow, but they do have to be concerned about another problem with field conditions.

Venomous fire ants have invaded their football field, forming massive colonies that make the field unplayable. The Associated Press reported that the school was forced to cancel a freshman football game, relocate practices and call the state Department of Agriculture.

"They're from South America," Syeda Jafri, spokeswoman for the Rialto Unified School District, told AP. "How they got here, we have no idea."

The school has called exterminators and hopes to have the field cleared of pests soon.

That's one good thing about Erie's cold falls and early winters -- you never have to worry about fire ants getting in your football pads.
