Saturday football games move into spotlight

Saturday games have become more prominent in District 10 during the past few years, and this weekend is no exception.

Several intriguing games will be played throughout the area Saturday. Here’s a look at three:

-- Possibly the most interesting game could be General McLane at Maplewood at 7 p.m. This is one of the most unusual matchups because the teams are seemingly juxtaposed this season. McLane, a former Class AAA power playing in Class AA this year, is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Region 4. Maplewood, which has struggled in recent years, is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the region. The Lancers, led by quarterback Kellen O’Neill, have to be favored in this one. However, the Tigers are greatly improved, thanks to a balanced attack featuring quarterback Broc Baker and running backs Jeremy Dunn, Justin Marvin and Nick Bancroft.

-- Strong Vincent visits Franklin in a non-region game at 7 p.m. The Colonels are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AAA by Pennsylvania Football News and No. 2 by the Harrisburg Patriot-News. They will try to move to 3-0 before they face Cathedral Prep next week. Running backs Darrell Brooks and Jordan Ferraro have led the high-powered Vincent offense, which has 102 points in two games. Franklin, coming off a loss to Corry, is led by quarterback Julian Wested and all-state wide receiver Tyler Bittner. Bittner has 11 receptions for 147 yards in two games.

-- Another non-region game will feature Meadville against East at 1 p.m. at Veterans Stadium. Meadville, led by quarterback Jarrod Kilburn, has been impressive on its way to a 2-0 start. East is on a 20-game losing streak, but the Warriors are scoring more under first-year coach Leonard Ford. Quarterback Corey Ratliff, who leads District 10 with 445 passing yards, will test the Bulldogs’ secondary.

Three other Saturday games: Mercer (2-0) at Kennedy Catholic (0-2) at noon, Harborcreek Youth Services (0-2) at Eisenhower (0-2) at 7 p.m. and Youngsville (0-2) at Mercyhurst Prep (0-2) at 7 p.m..
