-- Cathedral Prep's Shyquawn Pullium had a huge rushing performance in a 42-21 victory over DuBois in non-region play Friday. Pullium gained 312 yards on just 15 carries -- an average of almost 21 yards per carry. He had three touchdowns, including a 66-yard run and 50-yard run in the fourth quarter while the game was still close. Pullium entered the game with just 58 yards on 21 carries, an average of less than 3 yards per carry.
-- Although it was impressive, Pullium's total was not a school record. Tim Colicchio rushed for a 382 yards on 26 carries and scored six touchdowns in Prep's 50-6 victory over McDowell in 1990. Jawan Walker ran for 337 yards on 31 carries in the Ramblers' 32-18 victory over Buffalo Bishop Timon in 2001.
-- Corry had to play without its standout quarterback Scottie Frisina, who was out with an illness Friday. Backup QB Mike Brown used the opportunity to show that he can move the team as well. Brown completed 16-of-35 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown in Frisina's absence. The Beavers still suffered their first loss of the season, 19-10 against Girard.
-- McDowell turned in its second 200-yard individual rushing performance of the season Friday when A.J. Fenton ran for 216 yards on 19 carries in a 49-13 victory over Norwin at Gus Anderson Field. In McDowell's season-opening 43-23 win over Prep, Alex Schmude rushed 13 times for 202 yards.
-- Fenton topped the 300 mark in total yardage in Friday's game, passing for 89 more yards. He gave the Trojans a 14-0 first-quarter lead by hitting Nate Bailey on a 47-yard touchdown pass. Fenton attempted only three passes in the game, but he completed two. His other completion was a 42-yard strike to Mike Bizzaro. Fenton helped the Trojans seal the win in the second quarter when he scored on TD runs of 1, 4 and 17 yards to give McDowell a 35-0 lead.
-- McDowell (2-1) now will get ready for the visit of WPIAL powerhouse McKeesport (2-1) . The Tigers, who beat Connellsville 67-7 Friday, suffered their only loss in their season opener against Ohio power Colerain, 14-7 in overtime. Colerain is ranked in some national polls.
-- Two-time defending District 10 Class AA champion Wilmington (3-0) flexed its muscles again Friday with a 42-7 rout of previously unbeaten Grove City in a non-region game. The Greyhounds now have won by lopsided margins in each game. They beat Brentwood 42-7 in their opener before downing a solid Greenville team 49-13 last week.
-- The bad news for other District 10 Class AA teams is that Wilmington has another Burns at running back. Chris Burns was a dominant D-10 player for the past two seasons, but he's now playing at Pitt. His younger brother Derrick is just a junior for Wilmington. He rushed 15 times for 182 yards Friday, including TD runs of 4, 1 and 56 yards. However, Wilmington has a lot of talent other than Derrick Burns, who entered the game as the team's third-leading rusher.
-- Saegertown and Linesville continued their remarkable early season runs.
Saegertown routed Cochranton 64-0 Friday in a Region 2 game and has now outscored its three opponents 147-15 -- an average of 49-5. Keenan Ellison, who entered the game averaging 19 yards per carry, showed his big-play prowess again for the Panthers. He broke punt returns of 65 yards and 72 yards -- both in the first quarter -- and added touchdown runs of 9 and 16 yards. Ellison also scored a pair of two-point conversions.
Meanwhile, Linesville beat Lakeview 56-12 in a Region 1 game and has now outscored its three opponents 135-19. Trevor Litwiler had an impressive game for the Lions on Friday, passing for 140 yards and touchdown strikes of 50 and 70 yards. He also had TD runs of 29, 25, and 2 yards on his way to 76 yards rushing. To cap things off, he went 8-for-8 on extra-point kicks.
-- Saegertown and Linesville, both Class A teams, will meet Oct. 10 at Linesville.
-- In Class AA, Sharon and Slippery Rock both won big Friday and are now tied atop Region 3 with 3-0 overall records and 2-0 region marks. Slippery Rock will host Sharon next Saturday.
-- One of the biggest surprises Friday was Cambridge Springs' 7-6 win over Union City. The Blue Devils had entered the game at 1-1 after pulling out a 6-0 win over winless Youngsville last week. Union City was 2-0 and rolling up big point totals behind quarterback Eric Albrecht. However, the Devils limited Albrecht to 93 total yards, and Union City went scoreless during the final three quarters. As a result, Cambridge Springs (2-1, 2-0) is in a first-place tie with Saegertown in Region 2.
-- North East's defense continues to be a big story early in the season. On Friday night, the Grapepickers shut out defending Region 4 champion Harbor Creek 34-0. North East held the Huskies to just 144 yards, including 29 passing. Nick Grow scored on runs of 21 yards and 16 yards to help the 'Pickers (2-1, 2-0) grab a 21-0 first-quarter lead. The defense took over after that.
-- Fairview (3-0, 2-0) showed once again Friday that it will be a contender for the Region 4 title. Peter Jackson rushed for 146 yards -- his third consecutive 100-yard game -- to help the Tigers to a 14-9 victory over Seneca. Fairview's young team seems to be growing up quickly. The Tigers will get some extra rest next week because they have a week off before hosting Fort LeBoeuf on Sept. 25.
-- Despite Fort LeBoeuf's struggles in its first two games, Blake Hockett was a force at running back for the Bisons, rushing for 106 yards and 160 yards in two losses. On Friday, however, Hockett helped the Bisons to their first win by gaining 121 yards on 24 rushes. He scored both LeBoeuf touchdowns and has now scored all three of the Bisons' TDs this season.
SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE
-- Strong Vincent did its part in setting up Friday’s big District 10 Class AAA showdown with Cathedral Prep. The Colonels moved to 3-0 with a 48-6 rout at Franklin on Saturday night.
It’s clear that the Vincent-Prep matchup could be a game of big plays because both teams are loaded with speed. Vincent’s top breakaway threat might be quarterback Deonte Flemings, the Times-News District 10 Preseason Player of the Year. Flemings showed some of his quick-strike ability Saturday when he broke a 42-yard run for the first touchdown against Franklin. He added a 43-yard TD run in the second quarter as the Colonels piled up 347 rushing yards.
Vincent is ranked No. 1 in District 10 in Class AAA, No. 1 in the state in the Pennsylvania Football News poll and No. 2 in the state in the Harrisburg Patriot-News poll. Prep is ranked No. 2 in D-10 and No. 5 in the state in the PFN poll.
-- General McLane has served warning to its detractors: Don’t forget about us. The Lancers, who had opened the season with consecutive losses in their return to Class AA, routed Maplewood 56-0 in Region 4 game Saturday. Lancers quarterback Kellen O’Neill finally broke loose, breaking off TD runs of 80, 76 and 57 yards on his way to 226 yards on just seven rushes. Kyle Majewski also broke a 57-yard TD run and Kyle Shinn had a 49-yard TD rush as the Lancers (2-1, 1-1) showed their big-play ability.
-- Franklin wide receiver Tyler Bittner caught four passes for 106 yards, including a 51-yard TD reception, against Vincent on Saturday. For the year, the all-state wideout has 15 catches for 253 yards. Last year, Bittner had 83 receptions for 1,127 yards and 16 TDs.
-- It wasn’t easy, but Mercyhurst Prep earned its first win of the season Saturday with a 14-0 victory over Youngsville. Chris Kurzik’s two short TD runs – one in the first quarter and one in the fourth -- accounted for all of the scoring.
Look for the Saturday Morning Quarterback again later this week.
