Saturday Morning Quarterback

Observations from Friday night football in District 10:

-- Iroquois has found a workhorse back in Zach Poulson. He rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns Friday against Harborcreek Youth Services after rushing for 214 and two TDs in a season-opening win over Conneaut Valley. That's 440 yards in two games.

-- Several quarterbacks are standing out early. Among them are:
Scottie Frisina, Corry: He passed for two touchdowns and 180 yards Friday in a 27-25 win over Franklin. He also had a 22-yard touchdown run. Last week, Frisina passed for four TDs and rushed for two more in a 42-14 victory over Titusville.
Eric Albrecht, Union City: He had two TD passes and a TD run and returned a punt 85 yards for a score Friday in a 49-6 win over Cochranton.
Deonte Flemings, Strong Vincent: He had a 22-yard TD run and a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown.

-- Statistical oddity: Seneca quarterback Joe Hewel has rushed for 161 yards in each of his first two games. He has rushed for five TDs so far, including runs of 71 and 94 yards.

-- Passing on the pass: Strong Vincent did not attempt a pass in its 61-6 victory over Central Tech. Saegertown did not attempt a pass in its 42-7 victory over Eisenhower. (Of course, the Panthers rushed for 448 yards on 68 carries and had three 100-yard rushers.)

-- Saegertown, which might be the favorite in Region 2, has won by scores of 41-8 and 42-7. Linesville, which has established itself as a Region 1 title contender, has outscored its two foes 44-7 and 35-0.

-- Right now, a showdown between Saegertown (2-0) and Linesville (2-0) would be quite intriguing. They've both been impressive in two wins. Fans will have to wait for Oct. 10 to see that happen.

-- Central Tech led 6-0 going into the second quarter Friday before Strong Vincent outscored the Falcons 61-0 in the final three quarters.

-- Meadville trailed 3-0 going into the second quarter before outscoring Warren 49-3 the rest of the way.

-- Defensive battle: Cambridge Springs and Youngsville combined for 225 total yards in the Blue Devils' 6-0 victory. Cambridge Springs had just 65 total yards but won on a fourth-quarter 10-yard pass from Steve Kargol to Colton Spaid.

-- Strong Vincent has scored 102 points (41 and 61) in two games.

-- Harborcreek Youth Services has been outscored 114-0 (58-0 and 56-0) in two games.

-- Fairview appears to a have a powerful line -- both offensively and defensively. The Tigers have run the ball well and allowed six points in each of their first two wins.

-- It was a heck of a defensive game for Evan Smith of Linesville on Friday. Smith recovered two fumbles, returning one of them 38 yards for a TD. He also intercepted two passes. That's someone who has a nose for the ball.

-- Maplewood is probably the biggest early season surprise in Region 4. The only Region 4 team that isn't a former Erie County League team, the Tigers moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the region with a 27-18 victory over Seneca.

-- The other big surprise in Region 4 is General McLane's 0-2, 0-1 start. No one should overlook McLane's ability to bounce back and win the region.

-- If you want to find a Region 4 coach, go to Harbor Creek's Weitz Stadium today at 7 p.m. The Huskies will host Girard in a Region 4 showdown, and every region coaching staff is bound to be there.

SUNDAY UPDATE:

-- The Region 4 race is just two weeks old, but already it has taken on a surprising shape. General McLane, which was in Class AAA last year and had entered as a prohibitive region favorite, is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the region. Defending champion Harbor Creek is 1-1 and 0-1. Meanwhile, Maplewood, which was 3-7 overall and 3-5 in Region 2 (a Class A region) last year, is tied for first at 2-0 and 1-0. Girard, which finished 2-7 last season, is tied atop the league with Maplewood and Fairview. It's obviously very early, but it's a start that not many people would have predicted.

-- General McLane will have a chance to show it's still a region contender when it travels to Maplewood on Saturday.

-- Cathedral Prep used big plays to do almost all of its scoring Saturday in its 34-18 victory over St. Joseph of Buffalo -- and the Ramblers needed them. A 52-yard pass from Patrick Barber to Noel Oduho gave Prep the lead in the fourth quarter. The Ramblers followed with a 37-yard TD run by Erick Green and a 32-yard run by Austin Smith. Prep earlier scored on a 79-yard kickoff return by RaSean Thrower.

-- One good sign for Prep: Each of their four big plays came from a different player. That means the Ramblers have varied sources of talent and don't have to rely on one or two star players.

-- East has shown that it's going to throw the ball this season under first-year coach Leonard Ford. The Warriors have featured quarterback Corey Ratliff. And even though East has started 0-2, the Warriors have scored 48 points in two games, which is a marked improvement from last year. Through two games, East has passed 65 times and run just 44. Ratliff has thrown for 224 yards and 221 yards in his first two games. He has passed for four TDs and run for another.
