Saturday Morning Quarterback

-- Strong Vincent's 40-14 victory over Cathedral Prep on Friday marked the second time the Colonels have beaten the Ramblers in consecutive matchups. They’ll need some time to equal their previous streak.

Prep was victorious 6-0 in the original game between the schools, played in 1934. Vincent proceeded to win the next 12 between 1935 and 1947.

The Colonels won each year between 1935 and ’38 by a combined score of 90-6. The series resumed with two games per year between 1943 and ’45, then single games in 1946 and ’47. The Ramblers' misery vs. Vincent ended in 1948 with a 25-9 victory. That result began a six-game run of wins for Prep. Despite Friday’s loss to the Colonels, Prep leads the all-time series 40-19-2. — Mike Copper

-- How good was Strong Vincent's defense Friday? The Colonels held Prep quarterback Shyquawn Pullium to 312 fewer yards than he had run for a week earlier. Against DuBois on Sept. 12, Pullium rushed for 312 yards on 15 carries. Against Vincent on Friday, he rushed for zero yards on seven carries.

-- Just when fans might have thought a quarterback couldn't have a much bigger game than North East's Curtis Bailey had Thursday, along came Corry's Scottie Frisina on Friday night. Bailey passed for 271 yards and 4 TDs in a 33-13 victory over Northwestern. Then, one night later, Frisina completed 23-of-33 passes for 382 yards and five TDs in a 49-42 loss to Meadville. He also ran for a TD.

-- We're not sure where Frisina's yardage and TD totals rank in Erie County or District 10 history -- there are no official records -- but it's hard to believe that many quarterbacks have passed for bigger yardage or TD totals.

-- Despite the loss to McKeesport, McDowell showed that it can play with the state's powerhouses. The Trojans held the Tigers to just 218 total yards (all on the ground). However, McDowell managed just 147 total yards.

-- Blake Hockett and Fort LeBoeuf picked the right night to break out. Hockett rushed for 230 yards on 19 carries after school officials paid tribute to LeBoeuf great Walley Mahle before the game. Mahle is one of the most beloved figures in Erie County sports history.

-- Union City stopped Iroquois' top runner, Zach Poulson, holding him to just 45 yards on 24 rushes. However, the Bears couldn't stop the Jake Szoszorek-to-Jeff Harvey connection. Szoszorek hit Harvey on two TD passes. Harvey also had two interceptions.

-- Poulson started the season with back-to-back 200-yard games, but teams are starting to gang up on him. He has managed just 113 yards on 36 carries the past two weeks, albeit on a sore ankle. The emergence of a passing game could be crucial to Poulson's yardage totals and the Braves' Region 2 title hopes.

-- District 10's leading rusher, Kyle Allen of West Middlesex, did it again Friday night. He rushed 12 times for 207 yards and three TDs in the Big Red's 45-20 win over Lakeview. He now has 750 yards on 74 carries. LeBoeuf's Hockett is second in D-10 with 617 yards on 85 carries.

-- A couple of District 10 teams continued scoring in bunches. Vincent's 40-point outburst against Prep was actually the Colonels' lowest total of the season. They are averaging almost 48 points per game. Seagertown had a season-high total Friday in its 78-6 win over Harborcreek Youth Services. The Panthers now have scored 41, 42, 64 and 78 in their four wins.

-- If there were any question whether Girard can win without quarterback Pat Dunn, the YellowJackets answered that question Friday. The Times-News picked a Seneca upset, but Billy Sobucki and the 'Jackets won again, 31-0. Girard is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 4 and is tied with Fairview (3-0, 2-0), which was idle Friday. North East (3-1, 3-0) leads the region.

-- Girard will face its biggest test of the season Friday when it hosts General McLane. The Lancers were expected to roll this season after their drop to Class AA. After opening the year with losses to Strong Vincent and North East, they have won two in row. Led by quarterback Kellen O'Neill, McLane beat Harbor Creek 49-14 a week after routing Maplewood 56-0.

-- Fullback Mike Kalustian continued to give Meadville a power running threat early in the season. He rumbled for 144 yards in a 49-42 victory over Corry on Friday.

-- General McLane had three 100-yard rushers in Sam McCaughtry (6-118), Kellen O'Neill (8-104) and Nick Lombardo (8-103).

-- Corry had two 100-yard receivers in Cory Owens (8-122) and Jordan Mosher (7-120) and nearly had a third in Mitchell Anderson (3-96).

-- Many people have assumed that Prep and Vincent eventually will play for the District 10 Class AAA title. But Meadville (4-0) and Grove City (3-1) have at least given the Erie powers something to think about with strong starts.

Look for the Sunday morning update above ...
