Playoff races taking shape

Several of this week's football games will have playoff implications.

In Class A, Region 1 is in a three-way deadlock for the top seed as Mercer, Farrell and Linesville are all 4-1. Since all three teams took turns beating each other, all three could remain tied at the end of the season. District 10 could then be forced to use a points system to determine the automatic Region 1 seed, but all three could make the postseason.

Eisenhower's win last week suddenly gave the Knights and Union City new life in the playoff race. Both teams are 3-3 in the region and are one game behind fourth-place Iroquois.

Class AA has its clear-cut, eight-team playoff field, but Titusville and Fort LeBoeuf could play back into contention with upsets over Wilmington and General McLane.

The Region 5 champion won't be determined after Meadville and Grove City play this week, but the Region 5 automatic playoff team will be. Whoever wins the matchup at Bender Field will clinch at least a tie for the region championship, and will have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the loser, therefore clinching the playoff spot.

Also in Class AAA, Strong Vincent can win Region 6 outright with a win at Veterans Stadium against East.
