Saturday Morning Quarterback

-- What a night at Gus Anderson Field.

McDowell fans saw an amazing game from their team, and they saw history in the Trojans' 55-20 victory over Latrobe. Quarterback A.J. Fenton rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. In the process he became the Trojans' leading career rusher with 3,150 yards. Late in the first half -- Fenton ran for 195 yards in the half -- he passed former leader Jeff Davis (3,045 yards), who starred during the late 1960s.

Fenton, who has committed to Wisconsin, has had a superb season while leading McDowell to a 4-2 record. He has 862 rushing yards this season.

-- Interestingly, Fenton isn't the Trojans' leading rusher this season, and he wasn't their leading rusher Friday night. Alex Schmude ran for 291 yards on just 14 carries Friday. He also had TD runs of 91, 72, 53 and 27 yards. Schmude now leads McDowell with 895 rushing yards.

-- Fenton and Schmude combined to help the Trojans rack up an incredible 633 rushing yards on 48 carries.

-- The Trojans' win sets up their showdown Friday with the state's top-ranked team, Gateway. The Gators (6-0), led by Ohio State recruits Corey Brown and Dorian Bell, have routed six opponents. They opened the season with a 45-17 victory over Penn Hills, then ranked No. 2 in the state. Since then, Gateway has won by scores of 56-6, 42-0, 44-8, 49-7 and 42-0. The Gators visit Gus Anderson Field on Friday. Should be fun.

-- That won't be the only interesting matchup Friday. Bradford's 41-0 victory over East on Friday set up the Owls' first-place dual with powerful Strong Vincent in Region 6.

Bradford (5-1 overall, 2-0 Region 6) has won five in a row since opening with a 16-6 loss to Fairview.

Meanwhile, Vincent has routed six straight opponents and is 2-0 in the region. The Colonels, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AAA in one poll and No. 2 in another poll, will be heavily favored. Vincent is coming off a 47-0 victory over Corry on Thursday. The Colonels led 47-0 at the half.

-- North East took command of the Region 4 race Friday with a 28-14 victory over Fairview. The Grapepickers (5-1 overall, 5-0 region) are one game ahead of General McLane and already own a victory over the Lancers (4-2, 4-1). Girard (5-1, 3-1) and Fairview (4-1, 3-1) are tied for third place and still in the thick of the title chase.

-- Union City didn't beat Saegertown on Friday, but the Bears did prove that the Panthers aren't invincible in Class A. Led by quarterback Eric Albrecht, Union City put a scare into Saegertown before losing 24-21.

-- Saegertown (6-0 overall), the Region 2 leader, will now turn its attention to Region 1 contender Linesville (4-1), which had been rolling until it lost to Farrell last week.

-- There were two intriguing region showdowns Friday night in Mercer County. Two-time defending District 10 Class AA champion Wilmington routed archrival Sharon 42-7 to move alone into first place in Region 3.

Meanwhile, Mercer beat Mercyhurst Prep 21-0 to muddy up the Region 1 race. Sharpsville remains in first place at (4-2, 4-1), but Mercer, Linesville and Farrell are now tied for second at 3-1.

-- Youngsville beat Harborcreek Youth Services 61-20 Friday night. Youngsville had 54 total points last season. That was the highest point total in at least 10 years for Youngsville.

-- Harborcreek Youth Services (0-6) is still looking for the first win during its inaugural season. The Spartans have lost by scores of 59-0, 56-0, 42-0, 78-6, 60-18 and 61-20.

-- Harborcreek Youth Services did have one bright spot Friday -- the connection of quarterback Andrew Smith and receiver Isaac Andrews. Smith passed for 193 yards, including TD passes of 25 and 38 yards to Andrews. Andrews finished with five catches for 145 yards. Smith also had a 70-yard TD reception.

-- It was a rough night for Erie's public schools. East lost its 24th consecutive game, 41-0 at Bradford. Central Tech suffered a 62-0 loss at Meadville.

-- Corry's Scottie Frisina became the first quarterback to top the 1,000-yard mark passing this season. He now has 1,092 yards in five games.

-- North East did a sensational job defensively against Fairview on Friday. The Grapepickers shut down the Tigers' rushing attack, limiting them to 46 yards on just 17 carries. The secret to North East's defensive success was its own offense. The 'Pickers' ball-control offense ran 77 plays, including 62 rushing plays. Fairview ran just 33 plays. North East had scoring drives of 16 plays and 17 plays.

-- North East held Fairview star Peter Jackson to 13 yards on seven carries. Jackson had entered the game as the only District 10 back to have run for more than 100 yards in each of his team's games this season.

-- Seneca lost to General McLane 35-6 Friday, but the Bobcats (1-5 overall) did show positive signs in their loss. Seneca outrushed the high-powered Lancers 319-313. Bobcats quarterback Joe Hewel continued his fine play by rushing for 146 yards on 16 carries. That's his third game of the season with at least 145 yards rushing. He opened the season with a pair of 161-yard games.

Jeff Granger added 97 yards on 11 rushes and Jake Muye had 51 yards on 10 carries. Muye also had a 25-yard TD run.

-- Look above for the Sunday morning update ...
