Saturday Morning Quarterback

-- All three of the District 10 teams that were undefeated entering Friday's action improved to 8-0.

In Class AAA, Strong Vincent routed East 51-0 at Veterans Stadium. In Class AA, Wilmington romped past Titusville 54-7. In Class A, Saegertown shut out Mercyhurst Prep 14-0.

-- Vincent became the first team in the district to clinch an outright region title. The Colonels completed their region schedule with a 4-0 mark. Wilmington clinched at least a tie for the Region 3 title Friday, while Grove City clinched at least a tie in Region 5.

-- Strong Vincent continued to not only win but also to dominate opponents. The Colonels outgained East 368-23. Vincent now has outscored its eight opponents by these lopsided figures: 41-20, 61-6, 48-6, 40-14, 35-7, 47-0, 62-0 and 51-0. The Colonels have outscored their past three opponents 160-0.

-- Probably the most remarkable statistic in District 10 this year comes from Strong Vincent running back Darrell Brooks. The 6-foot, 180-pound senior is averaging 15.4 yards per carry. That's incredible. Brooks now has 878 yards on just 57 carries.

At his current rate, Brooks would need only eight carries next week to reach the 1,000-yard mark -- in just 65 attempts. Brooks carried 10 times for 231 yards Friday and ran for 4 TDs, including a 97-yard run. He also returned a free kick -- after a safety -- 65 yards for a score.

When Brooks breaks into open field, he's gone. After all, he's the reigning District 10 Class AAA 100-meter champion.

-- Cathedral Prep ended a two-game losing streak with a thrilling 41-34 victory over Buffalo St. Francis. Erick Green (18 carries, 149 yards) and Shyquawn Pullium (23 carries, 147 yards) each ran for three touchdowns for the Ramblers. Green's final touchdown came with 9 seconds remaining to lift Prep to victory.

Prep, which is 4-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 6, will host Bradford on Thursday in a region game.

-- McDowell's offense is a well-oiled machine and its motor is A.J. Fenton. The senior quarterback turned in another fantastic effort Friday when he rushed for 175 yards and passed for 97 in a 45-8 victory at Penn-Trafford. He went over the 1,200-yard rushing mark for the season.

-- McDowell's Zach Greenawalt made the most of his touches Friday night. He had one reception and ran four times, but he scored three TDs on his five touches. Greenawalt ran four times for 24 yards, including TD runs of 4 and 10 yards. His one reception was good for a 75-yard TD.

-- Two D-10 players reached the 1,000-yard mark Friday. McDowell's Alex Schmude ran for just 28 yards Friday, but that pushed his season total to 1,005. It gave the Trojans a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.

Meanwhile, another quarterback, Seneca's Joe Hewel, reached the 1,000 mark. He rushed for 181 yards on 25 carries Friday, raising his season total to 1,008 yards.

-- Jared Lane has emerged as a force for Fairview during the second half of the season. The 5-foot 7-inch, 175-pound junior spent most of the season as a secondary back to Peter Jackson, but on Friday night Lane broke loose. Actually, he broke loose over and over again.

Lane rushed 28 times for 312 yards, including touchdown runs of 58 and 30 yards. That gives Lane a remarkable 504 yards in his past two games. He rushed for 192 yards on 28 carries in the Tigers' 42-13 victory over Maplewood last week.

Jackson carried most of the load early in the season, as he rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the Tigers' first four games. However, Lane picked up the pace when defenses began to focus on Jackson. Lane, who leads Fairview with 788 yards on 113 rushes, has a chance to extend the Tigers' streak of 1,000-yard rushers to eight seasons. Jackson has rushed for 603 yards.

The most recent member of Fairview's 1,000-yard club was Tyler Sargent, who ran for more than 2,000 yards last season on his way to being names Erie Times-News District 10 Player of the Year.

-- Lane's performance marked the second time this season that a District 10 back has rushed for exactly 312 yards in a game. Cathedral Prep's Shyquawn Pullium achieved the feat Sept. 12 against DuBois.

-- General McLane's Nick Lombardo also recorded some crooked rushing numbers Friday in a 42-7 victory over Fort LeBoeuf. Lombardo, a 6-foot, 160-pound junior, rushed for 194 yards in the game. But here's the most impressive thing about his night: He did it on just five carries. Lombardo averaged about 39 yards per carry, including TD runs of 85 and 42 yards.

Lombardo entered Friday with 119 yards on the season.

-- Two other McLane backs also had big games Friday. Quarterback Kellen O'Neill rushed eight times for 124 yards, including TD bursts of 49 and 46 yards, and Sam McCaughtry added 123 yards on five carries.

O'Neill, a slick option quarterback, is closing in on 1,000 yards. He now has 951 yards on just 67 carries, an startling average of 14.2 yards per attempt.

-- McLane rushed for 513 yards against LeBoeuf -- on just 34 rushes.

-- Girard also had a huge game on the ground in a 44-0 rout of Maplewood. The YellowJackets rushed 50 times for 368 times. They did not attempt a pass.

Josh Williams led the 'Jackets with season-high 161 yards on 17 carries. He had touchdown runs of 7 and 6 yards.

Billy Sobucki, meanwhile, continued to close in on his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. Sobucki rushed for 101 yards on 16 carries and now has 845 yards.

-- Interesting stat: Girard's Kyle Marzalen has two total carries in the past two games -- for 136 total yards. On Oct. 11, he broke his one carry for a 92-yard TD run. On Friday night, he rushed one time for 44 yards. That's maximizing your carries.

-- The Region 4 title race remains bunched up. First-place North East (7-1 overall, 6-0 Region 4) took a night off from the intense region race, recording a nice non-region win over Bradford.

Girard (7-1, 6-1), Fairview (6-1, 5-1) and General McLane (6-2, 5-1) are tied for second place. Next week, Fairview visits Girard, General McLane hosts Northwestern and North East hosts Maplewood. Then, on the final week of the regular season, North East visits Girard and Fairview visits McLane in a pair of games that could decide the region title and playoff berths. What a Friday night that will be.

North East could clinch at least a tie for the title next week with a win over Maplewood.

-- Corry made a nice comeback Friday on the way to a 15-14 Region 5 victory over Warren. The Beavers (4-4, 2-2) kept their slim playoff hopes alive by scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns on Scottie Frisina-to-Craig Marti passes.

-- Grove City (6-2, 3-0) clinched a D-10 playoff berth and at least a tie for the Region 5 title by beating Meadville 17-0. The Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1), however, are still in playoff contention. They must beat Franklin on Friday to seal a playoff berth. If Meadville beats Franklin, and Grove City loses to Warren, the Bulldogs and Eagles would share the region title.

Meadville must beat Franklin because the Bulldogs close the season against powerful Strong Vincent. That would be a tough one to win.

Corry (4-4, 2-2), which has completed Region 5 play, hosts East (1-7) on Thursday before closing the season at home against Bradford (5-3).
