The Strong Vincent football team ranked first and second in the state's two major polls, will open postseason play against Meadville in the District 10 Class AAA semifinals on Friday.
The Colonels, who completed their 10-0 regular season with last weekend's 42-6 victory at Meadville, take on the 6-4 Bulldogs in a rematch at Veterans Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Cathedral Prep (6-4) and Region 5 winner Grove City (7-2) will meet in the other AAA semifinal at 7. Those teams will meet at Slippery Rock University's N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
State-ranked Wilmington and Region 4 winner North East are the favorites to meet in the Class AA championship game. Both teams enter the playoffs at 9-1.
The AA quarterfinals will take place Saturday. Wilmington draws Girard (7-3) at Slippery Rock, while the Grapepickers take on Slippery Rock High School at Veterans Stadium. Both games have 7 p.m. kickoffs.
The other AA quarters that involve Erie County teams are General McLane (8-2) vs. Greenville (8-2) at 7 at Edinboro University's Sox Harrison Stadium. Fairview (7-2) and Sharon (9-1) meet at Wilmington High School at noon.
Iroquois, on the basis of a better overall record, received the final berth for the Class A playoffs. The Braves beat Eisenhower 13-10 on Saturday to finish at 6-4, a game better than Mercyhurst Prep.
The Braves and Lakers both finished 5-3 in Region 2 play. Mercyhurst beat Iroquois 20-6 during the regular season, but the committee opted for Iroquois based on its overall record.
Iroquois will open against Mercer (9-1) on Friday at 7 at Wilmington. Also starting on that day and time will be Cambridge Springs (7-3) and Linesville (8-2) at Edinboro; Region 2 champion Saegertown (10-0) vs. Sharpsville (6-4) at General McLane's Linden Field; and Farrell (8-2) vs. Union City (7-3) at Allegheny College's Fuhrer Field.
