District 10 girls team swimming previews

2008-09 season previews for District 10, compiled by Times-News staff writer Mike Copper. Teams without information did not return a preseason survey.


Region 1

Franklin

2007-08 record: 12-2-1 overall, 11-2-1 region

Coach: Eric Smith

Top swimmers lost: Chelsea Virgile (four-time PIAA medalist, five-time District 10 champion)

Top returnees: Amira Quarles, sr.; Megan Kahle, sr.; Lindsey Kahle, so.

Teams to beat in your region: Grove City, Titusville, Oil City

It would be a successful season if: We challenge for the region title, have PIAA qualifiers and be in the top five at the state meet.


Grove City

2007-08 record: 9-5, 7-5 region


Hickory

2007-08 record: 5-6 overall, 5-6 region.


Oil City

2007-08 record: 11-4-1 overall, 9-4-1 region


Sharon

2007-08 record: 5-13 overall, 3-11 region

Slippery Rock

2007-08 record: 5-8 overall, 4-7 region

Titusville

2007-08 record: 13-2 overall, 13-1 region champion

Rocky Grove

2007-08 record: Not available.

Note: Rocky Grove returned to District 10 this season after competing as a District 9 school. The Orioles compete as individuals, not as a team.


Region 2


Corry

2007-08 record: 4-14 overall, 4-14 region

Note: Ryan Lawrence takes over as head coach from Jack McIntyre, who retired after 25 seasons with the Beavers.


Fairview

2007-08 record: 18-0 overall, 18-0 region champion

Coaches: Kim Jensen and Rebecca Turner

Top swimmers lost: Lauren Morosky (first team all-state 200 freestyle relay, second team all-state 400 freestyle relay); Katie Boroski (first team all-state medley relay); Eilean Kobal

Top returnees: Ashley Lehr (sprints); Emily Nash (backstroke, sprint freestyle); Mallory Waldinger (sprint freestyle); Claire Kobal (sprint freestyle); Kim Fiorenzo (distances); Jessica Kocan (distances); Kristen Miller (individual medley, butterfly, sprint freestyle); Emily Morosky (backstroke, butterfly, sprint freestyle); Maggie Glass (sprint freestyle); Katelyn Jones (all freestyle); Amanda Lawson (IM, breaststroke); Jocelyn Lion (diving).

It would be a successful season if: We can repeat as district champions and place in the top five teams at the state meet.


General McLane

2007-08 record: 12-6 overall, 12-6 region

Coach: Andrea Winger

Top swimmers lost: Hannah Woods, Allie Curtze, Jen Adelman

Top returnees: Elisa Grant (PIAA qualifier)

It would be a successful season if: We have fun and are a better team at the end of the season than the beginning.


Girard

2007-08 record: 4-14, overall, 4-14 region

Coach: Cindy Nelson

Top returnees: Amy Erickson (sprint freestyle and backstroke); Jillian Potthoff (middle distance free and butterfly); Danielle Getz (distance freestyle and breaststroke); Victoria Olesnanik (distance freestyle and individual medley).

It would be a successful season if: The number of swimmers increased from previous years, and our relay teams break at least two records.


Harbor Creek

2007-08 record: 9-9 overall, 9-9 region

Coach: Dana Foster

Top swimmers lost: Kayla Mennini (District 10 qualifier, member of the school-record 200 medley relay team); Casey Folga (10th at district meet in diving); Bethany Taccone; Justine Drobich

Top returnees: Brittany DiSanti (two-time district diving champion); Sarah Woodring (fifth at district meet in diving); Kelly Schultz (seventh at district meet in diving); Shannon Markham (member of school-record 200 medley relay team); Hannah Holland (member of the school-record 200 medley relay team); Kelly Wehner (district qualifier); Liz Krivonak (district qualifier); Lauren Zarger; Rachel Romanowicz; Brittany Palmer.

Top new swimmers: Madeline Zarger, Christine Zdanieswski, Danielle Berlin, Jackie Gowan, Savannah Manski, Julia Trimble, Emily Hesch, Jamie Jaworski, Kayla Slavinski.

It would be a successful season if: We finish in the top three or four in the region as a team, many girls qualify for the district and state championships, some school records are broken; and everyone stays healthy.


Iroquois

2007-08 record: 6-12 overall, 6-12 region

Coach: Mike Kujawinski

Top swimmers lost: Brittany Pearson, Emily Swanson

Top returnees: Rachael Ragen (District 10 champion), Jackie Bosak, Alaina Davison, Lindsey Finke, Jordan Coon.

Top new swimmers: 12 first-year swimmers.

It would be a successful season if: Everyone improved upon their personal best times.


North East

2007-08 record: 13-5

Coach: William Mackin, 12th season (114-56 overall)

Assistant coaches: Bryan Lee, Sara Land

Top swimmers lost: Kim Giles, Lily Oberle, Krista Banks.

Top returnees: Emily Mazzeo, sr.; Adrian Morgan, sr.; Risa Mrozowski, sr.; Jamie Wilkins, sr. (PIAA qualifier).

Top new swimmers: Alia Clark, fr.; Caitlin Wilkins, fr.; April Meehl, fr.; Caroline Bojarski, fr.; Hannah Weiszczyk, fr.

It would be a successful season if: We finish 12-2 at the end of the season. We must take each team seriously. I would like to rewrite one to four school records. I would like the ladies to finish in the top three in the District 10 meet and get a few qualifiers on to the state meet.


Union City

2007-08 record: 0-18 overall, 0-18 region

Region 3


Central Tech

2007-08 record: 0-10 overall, 0-10 region

Coach: Brian Page, fourth season

Assistant coaches: Bryan Lee, Sara Land

Top swimmers lost: Tina Wendel

Top returnees: Emily Antolik, sr.; Sam Swanseger, sr.

It would be a successful season if: We can qualify our relay teams and more individuals for the District 10 meet.


East

2007-08 Record: 2-8 overall, 2-8 region

Coach: Denise Lewandoski, 11th season

Assistant coaches: A.J. Hanson and Abbey Michalski

Top returnees: Julia Adams (individual medley, backstroke); Karyn Adams (butterfly, freestyle)

It would be a successful season if: Every swimmer has fun, beats their personal-best records, and at least two girls qualify for the District 10 meet.


McDowell

2007-08 record: 11-1 overall, 10-0 region champion

Coach: David Schultz 22nd season, (21-41-1 overall)

Assistant coaches: Roman Stefanelli, Michael Esper

Top swimmers lost: Colleen Harriger, Kaitlyn Karl (District 10 champion)

Top returnees: Kelsey Herbst, sr. (District 10 champion); Jackie Rzymek, sr. (District 10 champion, All-America status); Kelsey Ferrante, so. (District 10 champion, All-America status); Colleen Sheldon, sr. (All-America status); Sarah Anderson, sr. It would be a successful season if: We place in the top five at the PIAA meet, win our 13th straight District 10 championship, and have six or more student-athletes make All-American.


Meadville

2007-08 record: 9-3 overall, 7-3 region

Strong Vincent

2007-08 record: 3-9 overall, 3-7 region

Coach: Jeff Spaeder, fifth season (16-69 overall)

Top returnees: Laura Hurst, so. (District 10 qualifier, 50 and 100 freestyle).

Top new swimmers: Katie Scully, fr., (100 backstroke and sprints).

It would be a successful season if: We had an individual swimmer place in the top six at the District 10 meet.


Warren

2007-08 record: 9-3 overall, 7-3 region


Mercyhurst Prep

2007-08 record: 10-8 overall, 10-8 Region 2


Villa Maria

2007-08 record: 16-2, 16-2 Region 2
