High School Hoops Hot List - Wednesday

With most boys basketball teams braving the icy roads, here are 10 tidbits and observations from Tuesday night's action:
1. The unbeateans can't lose - District 10 had four unbeaten basketball teams entering Tuesday and three won while the fourth was idle. The Reynolds boys (11-0) beat Class A power Kennedy Catholic 77-69, the Reynolds girls (10-0) beat Commodore Perry 65-37, the Harbor Creek boys (9-0) beat Warren 61-41 and the General McLane girls (8-0) were idle.
2. Kyle Randall can't be stopped even in a loss - The Kennedy Catholic star scores at will every night he laces up his shoes. Even against unbeaten Reynolds, Randall scored 36 points. He is getting closer and closer to becoming Kennedy's all-time scorer.
3. The Mercyhurst Prep boys might be best in the city - The Lakers made a huge statement to Erie city teams with a 50-46 win against Class AAAA McDowell. Mercyhurst Prep will get its chance to prove its worth again on Jan. 31 against Strong Vincent, but will not play Cathedral Prep, East or Central Tech this season.
4. If you don't believe it by now, Farrell is the real deal - The Steelers may have started the season slow, but they are on fire now. Farrell is 5-0 in District 10 after starting 1-3 against teams outside of D-10. Marsell Holden scored 30 points Tuesday as Farrell knocked off Slippery Rock 68-54.
5. Harbor Creek is a collection of headaches for opposing defenses - The Huskies still haven't lost this season, and a big part of why they haven't is getting contributions from everyone. Harbor Creek has four players averaging double digits this season, with seemingly a new high scorer each game. Kyle Mayes led the Huskies on Tuesday with 22 points.
6. Villa Maria is enjoying its new region - The Victors moved into Region 3 this season with basically an all-FCVC region. The Victors knocked off Maplewood 46-35 on Tuesday to move into first place by themselves. Villa lost its first meeting with second-place Titusville on Dec. 12, but will get another shot at the Rockets on Jan. 20.
7. Region 4 leaders on a crash course for each other - Mercyhurst Prep and Fairview still haven't lost a region game, and it looks like it will take a meeting between them for one to lose. The Tigers handled Union City 52-40 on Tuesday, while the Lakers played a non-region game. The two were supposed to meet on Dec. 22, but the game was postponed because of inclement weather. The game will be made up Jan. 21 with a second meeting nine days later.
8. East is not going away no matter who they play - The Warriors hosted traditional power General McLane Tuesday and beat the Lancers 57-46. The trio of Gil Rogers, Wendell Torres and Corey Ratliff have been impressive for East this season. The Warriors will have a true region test stretch coming up with a Jan. 16 game at Girard, and a Jan. 20 game against Harbor Creek.
9. Cathedral Prep is a true road team - The Ramblers improved to 6-2 on the road this season with a convincing 63-44 win against George Junior. Prep's only two losses away from the Hammermill Center this year were in the championship of the Moon tournament against Peters Township, and in the championship of the KSA tournament in Florida against Chartiers Valley.
10. Reynolds' inside-outside combination is impressive - Chris Laverty and Russell Conley proved Tuesday night that the duo can lead the Raiders to quality wins. Reynolds won't have to leave Mercer County the rest of the season until the playoffs, and could easily be 22-0 when the D-10 committee gives them a spot. Laverty is Reynolds' all-time scorer, while 6-foot 9-inch Conley recently reached the 1,000-point milestone.
