R.J. Petrella has already made a splash with the Fairview boys swimming team. The freshman has been a multiple winner in several duals for the Tigers, whose 144-19 Region 2 victory over Girard on Thursday gave them an overall record of 9-0.
Petrella's presence in today's Iroquois Invitational could be significant for another reason. Not only for how he does in the Braves' pool, but what he wears in it.
According to Fairview coach J.R. Jensen, Petrella could break out his Speedo LZR Racer suit for the first time. Petrella received the expensive suit, the same type used by Michael Phelps at the 2008 Summer Olympics, as a Christmas gift.
Various Olympic and world records were set by swimmers who wore the LZR Racer during competition at the Beijing Games. However, its thickness and design led to cries that the suit created illegal levels of buoyancy.
Such buoyancy allows swimmers to remain higher in the water, creating more of a hydroplane effect.
The legality of the LZR Racer is expected to be the focal point of a Feb 20 meeting by FINA, swimming's international governing body. More than 20 swimsuit manufacturers have been invited to the meeting, which will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Until then, Petrella will be allowed to wear the suit.
Today's Iroquois Invitational, a boys-only event, starts at 9 a.m.
