Villa Maria girls are No. 1 in the state

The Villa Maria girls along with four other District 10 teams are in the top 10 in the state according to the latest Harrisburg Patriot-News high school basketball rankings. Also, five D-10 teams are in the honorable mention category.

The Victors (9-2) are No. 1 in the state in Class AA girls, while Girard (8-2) is No. 6. Villa defeated Girard 43-24 on Dec. 11 at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center. The two teams will play at least one more time on Jan. 15, with meetings in the D-10 and PIAA playoffs possible.

In Class AAA girls, Mercyhurst Prep (7-3) was upset by a sharp-shooting Franklin team on Saturday, but is pegged as the No. 5 team in the state. Laker-rival General McLane (9-0) is No. 10. Mercyhurst and McLane will finally play on Jan. 19 at McLane with a second meeting at Mercyhurst on Feb. 5.

McDowell (10-1) rounds up the girls teams with an appearance in the honorable mention category in Class AAAA.

In the boys rankings, Kennedy Catholic (8-1) is No. 2 behind defending PIAA champion Serra Catholic. The Golden Eagles take on unbeaten Reynolds on Tuesday.

Hickory (9-1) and Girard (7-2) are in the honorable mention for Class AAA, while McDowell (8-2) is in the same category in Class AAAA. Mercyhurst Prep (8-1) is also honorable mention in Class AA.
