Bisons must come up big in PIAA opening dual

The Fort LeBoeuf wrestling team has reached the PIAA Class AA team tournament final on two occasions. Wyalusing Valley (40-16) beat the Bisons for the 2000 championship, as did Bloomsburg (38-26) for the 2004 title.

But if LeBoeuf is to match such a feat, it must do so with an effort that would trump the previous two.

The District 10 Bisons (12-5) draws District 7 Shady Side Academy (18-4) in today's AA first-round dual at Seneca Valley High School. The second-seeded teams meet at 7 p.m. in Harmony.

Just to advance to Hershey's Giant Center, where the tournament's remaining rounds will take place, LeBoeuf must beat a team with five former WPIAL champions, including two returning PIAA champs in Dane Johnson and Roman SanDoval.

When the Bisons advanced to the '00 and '04 AA state finals, they were district titlists and automatically opened in the tournament quarterfinals.

Not so this time. If LeBoeuf wins, it would face District 9 champ Ridgway in Friday's quarters.
