Waltko beats Prep's Wellek for 130 AAA state title

North Allegheny senior Joe Waltko beat Cathedral Prep's Rocco Wellek for the 135-pound title at Saturday's PIAA Class AAA wrestling tournament. Waltko never trailed as he decisioned Wellek, the most successful wrestler in Ramblers' history, 10-6 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Wellek, bound for the University of West Virginia wrestling team, concluded his scholastic career with a record of 159-31. He was Prep's first state finalist since 2005 and was attempting to become the team's first state champion since Rob Loper won it all at 125 in 1996.

Waltko won his first state title with a record of 41-1. He claimed the Tigers' 26th individual PIAA championship, the third-most among WPIAL schools.
