...But will the rest of the party agree?
McCain said earlier this week that he would not rule out picking a pro-choice running mate--a political move that put former PA Governor Tom Ridge in the spotlight again.
Ridge joined McCain here in Erie Sunday and Monday for a little campaign stop...where he made comments that suggested he would not pick Ridge.
But suddently the abortion issue amounts to 'a disagreement' and McCain thinks conservatives would accept Ridge, who is pro-choice, as a potential running mate.
Ridge told me that he really has no idea if he's in the running or not. A comment I certainly don't believe.
And McCain told the Weekly Standard, "Tom Ridge is one of the great leaders and he happens to be pro-choice. And I don't think that that would necessarily rule Tom Ridge out."
But I'm not so sure the rest of the Conservatives...especially those Christians are with McCain on this possible move.
Top social conservative leaders in key battleground states are urging John McCain not to pick a running mate who supports abortion rights.
Good old Mike Huckabee (where has he been lately, by the way) made it clear John McCain should not pick a pro-choice VP or Mitt Romney for that matter. (No abortion flip floppers allowed either!)
Ridge might be an asset with moderate voters--but there's no way around it-- he's a serious downer with the social conservatives.
